NYC Police shooting complete with video:

Not the best camera work but still caught on cell phone video. It's a new era when everyone, everywhere has a movie camera on them.

Apparently crazy guy with knife in Times Square today, cops follow him several blocks and try to subdue him with non-lethal means, (pepper spray), finally one of the cops has had enough and decides to cancel the guy's ticket before he stabs someone.

Seems like a good shooting but definitely in a super crowded tourist area, people everywhere...I hope he had a good backstop and no cross-fire issues.

Don't bring a knife to a gunfight.

That said - you'd think this was a good opportunity to use a taser.

Fortunately, they didn't. Now we don't have to pay for his trial and jail terms, and he won't get out of jail or get off and go nuts again.

Just imagine this was your friend or family member gone astray. Not sure if you'd still think it was that great he got capped. For all you know this guy may have had the wrong mushrooms and would have snapped out of it okay the next day.

There is no excuse for his behavior. He could have killed someone before he came to his senses. If he were a loved one, I'd not be able to live with knowing he killed someone.

I still stay with my opinion that you shouldn't kill someone unless you have to.

That video is next to useless... Regardless of the quality you can't determine justification via video anyway.

The cop that shot him made a decision based on what was happening in front of him.
The limited contact and communication between him and the guy with the knife plays a big part of that as well. He had to make a decision. It's a shame it turned out the way it did. Long term I hope the cop can deal with what's happened.

Not sure if lethal force was called for here.

But as you may have heard NYC cops are good at using a lot of bullets to stop someone.

Having said that, none of us, including myself were there and we really can't know the circumstances behind the shooting. I'm hoping that being in full view of bystanders that the shooting was justified.

I surprised they did'nt cap the Ferrari dude for being an ass.

In my family we had three NYPD veterans and with a combined 90 years of service one claimed never having to draw his weapon, the other only once and another (retired Inspector and commander of Manhattan North in the 60's and 70's) quite a few times, but all three never discharged their weapons.

It just seems that the new breed of young cop is a lot more aggressive with the use of their weapons.

Just sayin.

Ahhhh, I dunno. I think cops 100 years ago would have shot a guy swinging a big knife around in public who refused to drop it and lunged at them.

Or the perp would have died of severe nightstick rash and no one would have filmed it or made a federal case of it. Everyone knows the rules - wield a weapon at a cop and you're basically committing suicide.

I have a family member who was fatally shot by a cop after he swung a wine bottle at him. His folks told my folks he died in a car accident, but I dug up the report and was pretty stunned. But he knew what he was doing and basically committed suicide by cop.

That's tragic. Any idea what motivated him to do this?
