The Perseid meteor shower. Anyone going to watch?
 

I've just made the last minute decision to head to Mt. Pinos and try and take some pix. Hopefully I will have something to post up when I get home later. :) It's supposed to be a good one this year! I believe it peaks at 2am PST, Sunday morning.

only get about three hours of darkness this time of year.

but might as well wander down to the beach to see.

It gets super dark here at our place.

Maybe I should step out and take a peek.

I'm planning on taking a look but I get a lot of light pollution from Chicago. Hopefully I'll see something.

You guys should be in Arizona... guess thats why they have so many telescopes here.

Years ago I had a g/f who was dumber than dumb. It was this time of year, and I was setting my alarm for the wee hours. She asks what I'm doing, I tell her I'm setting my alarm so I can get up and watch the meteor shower. Her reply: "Why don't you just tape it?"

There's an app for that. No really. NASA's got something so you can help count the number of metors. It was in the LA Times

Yeah, every meteor shower is best watched in the wee hours of the morning. And it's not just because it's dark. The Perseids appear to come from the Perseus constellation. Right now, Perseus is still partially below the horizon. The best time to see the meteors will be when Perseus is nearly directly overhead which will be essentially, before sunrise. I'd think that for folks most folks, after 4am would be the best time.

I'll be out there next to the fire pit. Not too big of a fire as to wash out the drama.

I won't forget my earplugs though!

Here's the only one I captured with a meteor trail. Looks like I got most of the trail, just a bit of the fade as it left the lower left of the screen. I have a bunch more of the Milky Way to go through. Weather was not great, high clouds rolled through all night and the meteor shower did not come through as expected. No way were there 100 an hour at 2am.

EDIT: The meteor is passing right down the middle of the Milky Way.

wife and I got up at 4:45am and went out on the deck to watch. Got there just in time before the clouds rolled in. Saw a few good ones and then went back to bed!............I was tired!

Over cast here last night although we saw a few through the holes in the clouds. It will be good all week as today was just the peak. We have clear skies today and forecast for tonight so we will build a fire out in the field and set up our portable air bed as usual. We have a star party every year for this shower. We have a lot of people that stayed over last night so they could see it tonight. Should be fun in any event.

At 0300 on my deck in Lakewood (Tacoma). No meteors in sight, the stars were a little washed out by ambient? light. Will try again tonight

Saw a few last night, missed a fireball on Monday night, they think some of it may have made it to the ground.

I only saw a couple last night.

I'll peek again tonight.

here are a couple of mine from last night. not happy with the way they came out. the one cloudy day a year up here....

in the first one, you can faintly see the meteor trail on the left side, streaking behind a cloud.

the second picture was taken about 25 miles from palmdale.
