Henry's LC Smith is back from Turnbull's `

Wow! The re-case coloring is done and vivid as these pics show.
I should have the whole thing assembled and ready to shoot next week. Henry will be glad to have it back again I'm sure. This was worth the wait and expense I must say and will finish off this restoration so it looks as good as one of Henry's motors!

He WILL have it by end of next week for sure. I've been ready to go but waiting on Turnbull then we were on vacation at the shop. I was milking Henry for avocados too.

Now THAT is case coloring! Wow.

How much care is that finish going to require? I'd be afraid to even let it out into the sunlight.

yes I would have time for visitors. What day? The colors are a nice bi product of case hardening. Originally guns were surface hardened this way. The colors are fragile and eventually wear off in time although the case hardening stays. UV light will steal the colors as well. This had to be annealed, heated and slowly cooled, first to draw the temper out of the metal, then re hardened, heated and quenched, to get these vivid colors. Turnbull's colors are very close if not exactly like the original color this was from the factory. Colors are dictated by the materials the metal is heated with. They use bone charcoal and leather most commonly. This will require no more care than you would normally use with any gun. Keep it oiled and not stored in direct sunlight. Time WILL take it's toll though just from handling.

I used to live right near Henry (Fallbrook, CA), when I was stationed at Camp Pendleton. I wish I knew him then, I would have been at his shop every day. Perhaps it's best that I didn't know him then!!

Nice work!

Yep, I like Henry too (I I don't like too many people). He is a true craftsman. It doesn't hurt that he built me such a great engine.

I think it might be a tad difficult to convince the wife to move to a colder climate again. And I must admit, I am not sure I want to live in NY state. I would love to work for him though.

I've had some Damascus rebrowning done by Keith Kearcher, he does beautiful work also and uses Turnbull for his case coloring. Double Guns and Gunsmithing: Keith Kearcher LLC

I'm going to need some springs made for a LeFever 16g, didn't know what your workload was like David or if you'd be up for it.

I live close by Turnbull's, and when I had a very unique Remington gun cane that was not working right, I stopped in to have them look at it. Between the tech and I, we figured out how to get it apart and fixed it right then and there in about 20 min. Gave the tech $100 and sold the cane for $5800 a few months later in a cane auction in Mass. They are always friendly and willing to help when you stop in at their shop.

Keith does excellent work. Reasonable fees too. What spring for what model Lefever?

It's an old damascus G grade. Picked it up cheap and Keith did the barrels and checkering. Someone had put real springs in there and had a couple double barrel fires with a single trigger pull. I'd need some of the "V" style springs made.

Don't worry Dave.
I have plenty of work for you if you'll work on hand guns as well..... We spoke a little about a long slide Colt.

Or maybe even a Schuetzen that needs some help.
