Love my 2004 A4. Just oil changes and wear items like brakes & tires.

RWebb 08-17-2012 08:12 PM

CU has statistical data

I cleared it, but it would come back on when started on a cool morning. Then the auto headlight system warning came on for a week, but luckily fixed itself. I also had to keep an eye on the oil because it likes to burn it. Apparently Audi thinks that is fine. When the keyless entry stopped working, that was it for me. Then I sold it and a huge weight was lifted from my shoulders. That was all within a three month period, and I'm pretty sure I forgot about some stuff.

Damn it was a sweet car though.

Sounds like ours but it was over a period of a good few years. My wife, or girl friend then, wanted it, but who am I to fight it. Happy wife, happy life. Now, she knows to trust me on this kind of stuff no matter how good the cars look, let be realistic about these things. She or we will not own an other Audi again. No British, or Volvos or BMW as daily drivers for us.

CR used car buying guide 2012 - No Audi listed as reliable, no Audi recommended best bet. Audi Q5 V6 listed as one of the worst of the worst.

beepbeep 08-18-2012 08:10 AM

I have -93 2.2t UrS4 as daily driver. 200kmiles.
Old Audis are OK if you are not afraid to do some complicated wrenching now and then. But if you are soccer-mom that needs reliable car it might get pear shaped in a hurry. They are designed by committee of engineers with tendency for Rube Goldberg solutions to ordinary problems.

Fortunately, lot's of parts are interchangable with Audi 100 and there are lot's of them in the junk yards.

http://news.consumerreports.org/cars/2012/03/car-brands-that-never-had-top-picks.html:
Consumer Reports has published Top Picks since 1997, and in that time, 20 brands have been included: Acura, Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Jeep, Kia, Lexus, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Plymouth, Pontiac, Subaru, Toyota, and Volkswagen.

Among the brands that were on the market in 2011, 17 never made the list: Buick, Cadillac, Chrysler, Fiat, GMC, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Lotus, Mini, Mitsubishi, Porsche, Saab, Scion, Smart, Suzuki, and Volvo.

That's weird. Buick was numero uno in J.D. Power quality surveys for a while in the last 10 years. Not sure where they are now.

I really like Audis. There is a reason why they sell so many, mostly styling and performance. I used to sell them, along with Porsches, back in the 1980s. I was working at the dealer when the whole 60 Minutes story came out which nearly sank the brand. To this day, it was one of, if not the single worst case of unfair publicity for a corporation in the hustory of the world. The story of unintended acceleration was complete BS and led to new regulations about shift locks and tons of hysteria.

I've always liked driving them. Their engineering has always been unique, much like Porsche, and they're great driver's cars. Their AWD system is the standard of the world for a sporty snow car or rally car. My cousins in MN., the Beddors, used to be sponsored by Audi as pro skiers in the late '70s and early '80s. It is how they got involved with motorsports, eventually they became very prominent with RUF cars and now the Pike's Peak hill climb is named after Frank Jr. Frank III used to drive a red Sport Quattro as a DD for years around L.A. in the '80s. Cool car.

Some of my friends have not had great luck with new Audis in recent times, both service issues with the cars and absolutely horrible dealer service depts. Then again, I have cousins in MN., (other ones, not the Beddors), who are on Q7 # 3 & 4. They went through 2 leased ones and got two new ones, both TDIs. Those are the shizzle for a family truckster in a place with 4 seasons. So I guess the first two could not have been too bad. They are good-looking beyond all get-up, IMO.

how does Audi's AWD compare with Subaru's?

That's something I'd like to know as well. I'm very impressed by the Quattro system.

Audi's current system is a touch more sophisticated than Subaru's. But they're close to the same more-or-less in that they are both symmetrical All Wheel Drive (depending on model w/ Audi). They are both fantastic, really.

But they don't make too many cars/CUVs that overlap or compete directly in the marketplace. If you can afford an Audi, you probably wouldn't consider a Subie.

Not really relevant to this thread but the best car I've ever owned was a 1983 Audi Coupe GT .... Bought it new and it had 175K miles when I sold it in 1984 and it still looked and ran good. Five banger and a 5 speed, not exactly overpowered but had absolutely no problems with it and it was a great looking and handling car for that era.

You put 175k on it in one year?

Re: the new BMW's , Audis, VW's, Porsches... I would say lease them and dump them for a new lease.
If you do purchase one...get rid of it when you still have a bit of warranty left. They are nice to drive when you dont have to pay for repairs/maintenance. But out of warranty.. look out . These are throw away cars unless you are extremely wealthy. Like I doubt that in 40 years or so we will see many 997's on the road.
But, cripes... in 40 years or less, I wont be on the road either.:(

I came really close to buying a UrS4 on several occasions. Really great cars, they don't seem to have the overly complicated systems of the newer models.
