Golf Club buying for a Beginner

I've taken a few lessons, and played one round of golf. I'd like to buy a set of clubs and I am wondering what approach to take? I'd like to spend ~500 so that knocks the custom rack out.

I've been looking on CL but most stuff seems to be a hodgepodge of junk.

Costco has a nice set, but I'd need a bag... Costco - Callaway Golf® 11-piece X24 Set with Regular Flex 10.5° Driver

Golf Galaxy and academy have box sets, but I'm not sure of those, most are brands I haven't seen.

I played with a set of Nike VR_S Rental clubs at Magnolia Grove in Mobile and really liked them, but they are way $$$...

So what do you guys suggest for the occasional player. Young guy, about 6' tall. Probably will be playing a few times a month at best. Spending more time on the driving range as it cools off.

Have you been measured up properly and had your swing evaluated? It'll make a big difference Sid, to what type of clubs will suit you best

Buy a really cheap (second hand) set off someone much the same hight as you then at a later stage, when you know what you want, buy a good set.

I bought clubs from the recyler at the dump for a dollar a club, LOL, OK ones too. and they lasted me for a couple of dozen games.

Welcome to the game.
Dont spend much on your first set, even buy second hand.
As long as they are for someone your size they will be fine.
If you like the game in six months you can start wasting your money like the rest of us golfers.

I bought my first set +20 years ago at a golf club - incl. bag and a set of used clubs $50. No point in spending the big $$$ until u decide u are serious about it! I prefer Harvey Penig(spelling?) Little Red Book for golf tips. Golf can be addictive. Once u decide u like it , then it is worth moving up to better clubs. Enjoy. If you get frustated in your early golf experiences, see a PGA, read golf instruction books.

Starting my 4th straight 60 hr week and basically my only expense is my food, which I collect per diem on the road. If I want to spend money on something I enjoy, I'm going to. I posted here so I could get a recommendation and not waste money on a set of clubs I'd be replacing in 2months.

Don't buy in the middle of the season. Rent / borrow clubs for now. During the off-season, look for sales, or buy used from CL as golfers look to upgrade their old clubs.

Pro shops have used clubs. I doesn't hurt to get to know the local pro. He can cut a deal too.

So all of the guys who golf here ARE giving you a recommendation. Play for a while on a used set until you determine what you like.

My advice is to buy a good quality USED set of last years model. Every year the mfgs come out with the latest and greatest that is gong to make you better than Tiger used to be. Those clubs in a year will be worth about HALFFFF..In the end one suspects that after a number of years last years model will once again be the newest, latest and greatest. On a set of used last years model you can easily spend 500. Also buy a NAME BRAND like Ping, Callaway, Titleist, Hogan etc. they will hold value after the initial depreciation.

I would probably find a Golf Store in your Hood and go and hit the demos in the store to get some idear of what you like. Check his USED clubs section and hit with them. Ebay is another good source of clubs..

I have a preference for the Ping EYE Irons, Callaway or Titelsit Drivers and Titleist Putters. Not that I was ever any good at the game. Ping has a colour coded system on their Irons in which each colour is designed for a persons specific height. I also had aqquired a set of Eye 2's in BECU..
