Anyone going to see Bob Dylan this year?

I just bought tickets.

I must be the only person who never liked Bob Dylan ... at all. I just never "got" his music, I guess.

Genius....not always the music. I often just read the lyrics.

I recently went through Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" with my six-string acoustic guitar. I am primarily a bass player, but I can play guitar.

I am a rhythm guy, clear through to the bone marrow. I don't even HEAR lyrics. I hear the rhythm. I have always loved that song because of the rhythm. It was his first (1965) full-on electric, 'rock' song. And yet, the rhythm guitar totally carries that whole song. It doesn't actually need the other instruments.

Dylan was one of those 'pure' artists. I probably agree with the many people who decried his move to electric instruments and music. His best work was done before that change.

Here's a list of venues. I'm not sure if he's an acquired taste, or you either love him or hate him.

We used to eat breakfast at a little hippie joint on Saturdays. They were frequently playing entire albums and Bob Dylan was a favorite.

I've always been an album guy over single tracks. I love Bringing it all back home.

Where I happened to be employed
Working for a while on a fishing boat
Right outside of Delacroix
But all the while I was alone
The past was close behind
I seen a lot of women
But she never escaped my mind and I just grew
Tangled up in blue.

She was working in a topless place
And I stopped in for a beer
I just kept looking at her side of her face
In the spotlight so clear
And later on as the crowd thinned out
I's just about to do the same
She was standing there in back of my chair
Said to me "Don't I know your name ?"
I muttered something underneath my breath
She studied the lines on my face
I must admit I felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe

She lit a burner on the stove and offered me a pipe
"I thought you'd never say hello" she said
"You look like the silent type"
Then she opened up a book of poems
And handed it to me
Written by an Italian poet
From the thirteenth century
And every one of them words rang true
And glowed like burning coal

Like it was written in my soul from me to you

I lived with them on Montague Street
In a basement down the stairs
There was music in the caf,s at night
And revolution in the air
Then he started into dealing with slaves
And something inside of him died
She had to sell everything she owned

And when finally the bottom fell out

The only thing I knew how to do
Was to keep on keeping on like a bird that flew

So now I'm going back again
I got to get her somehow
All the people we used to know
They're an illusion to me now
Some are mathematicians
Some are carpenter's wives
Don't know how it all got started
I don't what they're doing with their lives
But me I'm still on the road
Heading for another joint
We always did feel the same
We just saw it from a different point of view

I always liked Dylan and one time he was to appear at the fairgrounds in Orange County, I paid the big bucks for the best I could get, 2nd row seats for me and the wife. It was horrible, the paper the next morning said it was the worst Dylan concert of all time. I still like him but that really sticks.

He's turned 70, or 71 and there simply is no substitute.

I'm hoping he's on game in August.

I love His Bobness, and have seen him perhaps 10 or 12 times in my life.

A great poet and voice of his time.

That said I have seen two of his concerts from his so called "never ending tour" and they were both appalling. In one we had seats near the front, and he came onstage, turned his back to the audience, and played virtually the entire set that way. (facing his band with his back to the crowd). Moreover, although I fully understand his thing about playing his tunes differently each night so they don't get old—they were almost all unrecognizable and uniformly awful.

I gave him one more chance last year in Hamburg. It was an open air venue, and although it wasn't quite as bad as the concert just described, it was a lacklustre and tired Bob, with very little left to give.

I'm not sure why he still does this "never ending tour" when he takes so little pleasure in it. Maybe I just caught two bad nights—but I have read a number of similarly bad reviews.

I think "I used to care, but things have changed" —sums the man up pretty well these days. Kinda goes with the Cadillac and Victoria's Secret commercials. He's even playing golf these days for Christ's sake.

I'll always love the old Bob. Not sure I'd see him live again. Rather crank up Blonde on Blonde on the stereo.

His entire musical career is one phase after another. Maybe when he's 73, he'll decide to do a tour where he plays all of his beautiful songs as beautifully as possible. It would be a first.

I was auditioning to play in a band several months ago and the subject of singing came up. I told them my previous singing roles have been very sparse, that I WANT to sing and can do it, but it's something I need to work on. The drummer asked me what kind of voice do I have....what singer does my voice sound like. I said "Well that would be Bob Dylan, except that Bob's voice is a lot better sounding than mine." I said it with a straight face.
