Absolutely. But that's one of the problems with the Tesla. It's over 100k, and, as your linked article points out, it's not all that comfortable.

Back when Prii were issued HOV stickers, most of my IT salesguy peers bought one. Not because it was green, but because it bought them an extra hour or two per day. $300K per annum/2080 hours=$144 an hour=$1440 per week extra time=$74K per year of more productivity. If it can seat customers comfortably and get 280 miles per charge and run a 12 second quarter mile, I see this taking off. I would assume a 650-750 per month lease payment and fuel savings alone would pay at least half that.

Moreover, I would consider getting one to help give the company momentum. In 2018, imagine how far they will have come with iterative improvements.

If everyone gets HOV lane access without having HO then you are right back to where you started...

I mean, on a 5 lane freeway the HOV is sucking up 20%. Adding one lane to 4 is a 25% increase in capacity.

a $7,500 credit (free money)
a sales tax waiver (here that's ~$10k on the Tesla S of this thread)
They pay no gas tax (again, that's high on the left coast)
AND, they get their very own express lane?

That's all good in theory but there are often cases where 25% more capacity doesn't help. And where the carpool lane stops just like everyone else. Welcome to elay. :cool:

The biggest problem is slow drivers in the carpool lane. If you get stuck behind one you have to wait miles to legally get out from behind them and use the normal lanes to pass.

After reading the NY Times review today I made a reservation for a Model S online. Then I decided to go to their showroom to look at the display model. It's big and very roomy if a bit utilitarian inside compared to other cars in its price range. The 300 mile range and the ability to fill up at home is very tempting, the 17" vertical touchscreen display is a little disconcerting. Unfortunately you have to make an appointment for the test drive so I can't speak to its driveability. I think the Model X (gull wing SUV) might be more in line with what I want. They are talking a six month wait for the Model S and 2014 for the Model X,
