FJ vs. Jeep... and why

Back in high school (late 70s), all of my buddies and I had four wheel drives. I had a CJ5 Renegade (as did a couple of others), one had a Toyota LC, another had an early Bronco, and still another had a IH Scout. We took 'em off road all the time, were all "young & dumb" and it was a badge of honor to drive 'em to school covered in mud except for the wiper areas. Back then every single one of those 4x4s were great, and I'd love to have any of them. Don't know a thing about recent generations though, but I doubt the build quality is what it was back then...we abused the hell out of 'em and they took it . The CJ5 was a terrible "college vehicle" though so I sold it to my dad after freshman year and he drove it for quite a few more years.

Jeep more fun, easier to Mod, cheaper in general on all fronts and I just think cooler looking. I think better at hardcore off road use due to size and better sight lines. Poor as a daily driver if it has been modded for serious off road use and not sure why you would own one in stock configuration. Best bang for the buck in the used market a Rubicon TJ with auto trans.

FJC...is a great all around vehicle. Built like a tank. I loved traveling in mine so performs well on the highway, comfortable and makes a great daily driver. Of course very capable off road but hard to see out of in general. Has to be driven like a panel van, that is be good at using your mirrors.

I would consider owning another jeep because I find them great fun. The FJC probably not....been there done that I guess is the feeling.

FJ80. BEcause I have had two of them. Great vehicles. I also had a YJ. Not so good with lots of issues. Couldn't really take the beating in the dirt. I am bias.

FJ's are great vehicles but I voted Jeep hands down on this poll. As with an FJ, entirely competant off-road in stock form but aftermarket is swimming with Jeep parts, upgrades, etc. The variety of build ideas with extensive aftermarket support is absolutely insane.

FJ80, simply the most over engineered vehicle that I have ever worked on. They are absolute tanks made to take you to hell and back reliably, there's a reason why they are so popular in remote places where your life can depend on your choice of vehicle. While I like Jeeps, even the most passionate Jeep enthusiast (and I know a few) would be hard pressed to list reliability as a primary trait.

I have owned an old FJ, a Defender 90 and my Daughter has a new(er) FJ.

I also love Jeeps, just haven't bought one. The reason is simple in my case. I like the relative rarity of the older FJ's, even the 80 series.

Rock crawling is not my thing, so the capabilities in slightly modified FJ's and Jeeps is all I will ever need. My son's 1999 TRD is more capable than any older stock FJ40 and can be driven in the real world.

It depends on how you are going to use it, and which model of Jeep.

The Jeep is a love it or hate it vehicle. I have had mine since Feb 1997. I knew I loved it the first time I drove one. For me it would be the Jeep. I have no problem sacrificing a little comfort for the outdoors experience. I like to tinker on it, and have over modified mine through the years.

I have friends that liked the idea of a Jeep, but when they had one they never had the top down, and never drove off road. They soon sold their Jeeps.
