1 lb Lobster vs 1 lb Lobster tail
We are going out for some lobster tonight. Here is what is confusing.
The menu has a special for a 1 lb Maine lobster dinner at $21.95. Great price. However, I see that they also have a 1 lb lobster TAIL dinner for $55.00. Does anyone know why they would bring out the whole lobster if you only eat the tail? If the whole lobster is brought out on a plate, what percentage of the weight is the tail? I am not picky but we only eat lobster once in a great while. West Coast. |

Depending on the bug, maybe 2/3 or so is in the tail. But the whole lobster has the claws, legs, etc. to pull meat from. Often tails are processed, frozen, and shipped but whole are usually live shipped.

And a tail might not be a Maine lobster

The best part of the lobster is that green goo right in behind their head anyhow.

Good lobster is sublime, bad lobster (most of it in my experience) is like chewing the rubber soles of a Doc Martin boot.

Whole Maine lobster or nothing. The claws and stuff make it worthwhile. Anything else is rubber.

I'd go for the whole lobster. I bought a realy large lobster once at a restaurant thinking it would be a real, belly-filling treat. It wasn't very tasty and a whole lot tougher than tail meat of a regular sized lobster. Besides at $22 you could buy two lobster dinners & still be ahead of the $55 for the big tail.

You will be hard pressed to find a 1lb Maine Lobster tail! Thats an old one. The 1lb lobsters are also known as chix - while they are tasty and what not they can't be veiwed as a meal. BTW - there is fine meat in the body as well - if your willing to get all midevil at the table...

It takes about 7 chix lobsters from Maine to get one pound of lobster meat. That green goo is what we call in the northeast, the tamale, sometimes it can have a bitter taste but other times it can taste very good. Not everyone eats it. Picking through the body can get you some of the sweetest meat in the lobster. The problem with eating larger lobsters is the people cooking them do it wrong and end up making it tough. Cooked right and the large ones are just as good as the smaller ones. Anything over 2 pounds tend to get cooked wrong making it tough. Right now lobsters around here are selling for $3.79 a pound. Living in the Northeast does have its advantages at times.

Just got back from a week+ on the Cape. Not that the Canadians are too happy about it, but: The lobster was great!

Mmmmmm,
grilled Lobster, my favorite. We usually grill between 30 - 50 tails on my birthday, Sept 3. So this weekend some tails on the grill! Tender and succulent. Obligatory pic from last year. ![]()

Oh.. those above pics of the tails. I would die for one of those.
We (four of us) all got the 1 lb Maine lobster dinners. They were good but we ate real slow because their was not a lot there. Very tasy, not too rubbery. Next time around I am going to get the biggest tail available. That green goo in the head didn't look so hot. I told my friend that it is the best part of the lobster and after one bite, he had had enough. |
