Online TV service like cable or satellite?
I've searched the internet and find some obvious scams, but am wondering if there is an online provider. I'm happy to pay a monthly fee for remote access but I can't find anything that looks legit or reliable. Anyone have insight?
To clarify I would like an online cable provider for lack of a better term. One I can access anywhere through a broadband connection. Being able to push to my TV would also be nice for when I'm home or hell even dedicate an old PC to that duty. You would think there would be a cost savings given no cables to run, no installs, no dish, etc....

hulu, netfilx, the various tube channels, whatever you can get OTA. My samsung tv has quite a few providers built in.. You can also get an Apple TV device cheap and access their provider apps.

Hold off on the apple tv for a bit. There is speculation that apple is going to turn TV on its head soon....

Those are movie apps and re-runs though. I want live TV, the networks, ESPN, etc.. Will Apple TV have that?

I am also in that camp. But increasingly I feel like saying f*** cable. I can get espn3.com for ALMS and stream other stuff. All the channels I used to like are becoming reality tv shows. Have you noticed that History, Discovery, Science, are all becoming the same thing? Guns, Alaska, Swamps. Now the new thing is antiques and knick-knacks. Science and NatGeo have the taboo/weird stuff cornered. And speed doesn't have anything I am really interested in except the occasional F1 race (when it is not on Fox) and the motorcycle races.
I can do without cable. I only watch an hour or two during dinner anyway.

This alludes to what I've been saying about the apple tv. Hold off until the keynote....

Because the Cable companies own the pipes, the last mile.
If what you want is cable content away from home then keep your cable provider and get a Slingbox. http://www.slingbox.com/get/countrySelect?page=/go/home

I like the slingbox idea but I don't want to pay $100 a month. My hope was there is a cheaper option.

Buy the Slingbox, drop it at a friends house and split the cable bill with them or pay them $50 a month to "lease" his line.

Friend of mine does this. He is flying out of India but would die if he missed his local sports programs, so Slingbox and he is a happy guy.

Ok, if you get someone to give you their Comcast login you can watch live ESPN, ESPN2, Disney, CNN, etcc.
Also a lot of on demand type stuff. Not exactly what I was looking for but live ESPN is nice.

Update on Apple TV.
AAPL new TV product pushed out as content negotiations stall once again. MacRumors summarizes a new Bloomberg article that says AAPL will not release a new "TV product" (set-top box or branded TV) this year as difficult negotiations with media companies have slowed AAPL’s plans. The report says negotiations between AAPL and media companies have stumbled because (1) the cable companies want to have control over the software and (2) cable companies want to distribute the device -- you could only see AAPL caving on the second one. AAPL is furthest along negotiating with TWC which could be its first partner in a similar way that AT&T helped bring the iPhone to market. Beyond live content, AAPL is also said to be pursuing substantial offerings of on-demand content, but media companies are wary of losing control of their content and the channel bundles offered through cable providers.

If you have a family, relative or other elsewhere in the world and willing to share their Dish user name and pw, your'e there. You don't need that Slingbox. I really despise the cr@p on Dish but have to comply and satisfy for some family in the house. But interesting enough, I can access online - anytime old and new programs, Speed, etc. shows, movies for example HBO for nothing extra. So when traveling, a laptop connected online is all that is needed. They also have some small program to initially download so if you have a slow connection, it prevents jittering and smooths the viewing. Works excellent and in HD too. If you'd like and have a PC with an i5 or i7 proc., use the push to WIDI for TV wireless. For all your local TV news coverage, etc.... well thats easy enough by just going to their site.
