No Easy Day

Picked up the autobiography today and it is one of those "can't put down" easy reads.
Mark Owen doesn't disclose any classified information.
Great non-fiction story.
I have read many SEAL books, mostly about my era, Vietnam.
You can actually begin to sweat as he goes through some of their ops.

To keep it out of the PARF... I thought I would give us an oppertunity to look at the lighter side of what it takes to be a SEAL. I will start with...

I was going to be a SEAL but I need 8 hours sleep or I don't funtion properly.

I was going to be a SEAL but the deal breaker was when the recruiter said I would have to hold my breath underwater.

I was going to be a SEAL but the sight of blood makes me want to pass out.

I was going to be a seal, but I might miss my morning cuppucino

"Mark Owen doesn't disclose any classified information."

Really?????????

Pentagon sez otherwise...

Reuters) - A book about the raid that killed Osama bin Laden by a former Navy SEAL who participated in the mission contains classified information and the Pentagon is reviewing legal options, a Defense Department spokesman said on Tuesday.

I was going to be a Navy Seal, but decided to go after Chuck Norris's job. Let's just say it didn't turn out so great....

I wasn't going to be a Seal because I'm not made out of tough enough material. I've worked my ass off for years and done some crazy sch!t, but I wasn't scared for my life nor did I have it on the line.

Brave m'f***ers.

And I hate freezing cold water and hot, dry windy hellholes.

I was going to be a SEAL but:
I joined the Army by accident....
I don't do swimming in open water......or cold water
I got into a fist fight with a Drill Sgt in BCT, I don't think BUDS would have gone over so well....
I hate running
Most importantly, when SEALs get in trouble, Rangers go in to save em and I don't trust those farkers......

I was going to be a Navy S.E.A.L., but as a US Marine, I was taught to never lower my standards!

Of course, I'm kidding! Nothing but respect for this elite group of some of America's finest!

Semper fi!

supposedly SEAL Teams are open to the USMC - no word on if any are in, but they are recruiting heavily these days

somewhere I saw a photo the UDT folks stuck up on a beach prior to an amphib. landing - it says "Welcome Marines"

I like those excuses but have a few to add:
I was going to be a Seal but they didn’t have any office positions open.
I was going to be a Seal but I won’t swim anywhere until the wife says the water temperature is acceptable.
I was going to be a Seal but I don’t like eating grub worms.

As far as I've ever heard, this is not the case. If one wants to be a SEAL, they MUST be Navy.

You may be thinking of the amphib landing the Marines and SEALS did into Somalia back in 1992. MISSION TO SOMALIA; TV Army on the Beach Took U.S. by Surprise

no, it was long before that, tho watching the TV crews was 'fun'

like I said UDT, predecessor of the SEALS so that tells you how old the photo is, likely WWII - not sure where I ran across it

When I was in the Navy ('82-'91), my best friend was in BUDDS training and I seem to remember him telling me that there were several Marines in the class. If they made it through training, I believe they converted them to the USN with equivalent rank, both officers and enlisted. I could be wrong, but I believe that's how they did it back then, now... have no idea.

I spent a significant amount of time working with a USAF Colonel and former fighter pilot that started his military career in the Navy. At some point early in his career he made the switch, so I know that's an option.

I was going to be a Seal but my fingertips get shriveled when submersed.
