Is that a 996 motor? Good thing those guys got more street smarts than Pcar skills. Not to mention as the tech could see obvious signs neglect. I love that show;-))

redstrosekNic 09-09-2012 11:10 AM

I remember that episode. No way I would have paid much for that engine... It was probably a bad core from a 996 that got a new engine.

Danny_Ocean 09-09-2012 12:20 PM

Ees OK. Ees gooood engine.

Joe Bob 09-09-2012 01:10 PM

The blurb says model year 2000.

450knotOffice 09-09-2012 02:08 PM

That was funny as hell. That engine looked like a worn out, neglected POS, and the mechanic called it perfectly. He exercised GREAT restraint! ;)

db_cooper 09-09-2012 06:19 PM

Danny the "mechanic" is an interesting person. His big bandanna over the forehead is typically used to cover up prison tattoos. The forehead is a favorite location for white supremacy messages.

Also, its not a motor...its an engine.

porsche930dude 09-09-2012 06:22 PM

Reminds me of the joke about the guy rescuing the little kid in the surf.....he beats his brains in to pull him to safety. The kid's Mom says...."he had a hat".....

CA people talk diff from others in other areas. get used to it....

I think its just his "look" (good or bad as it may be). I think i've seen him
a pic or two without it. No forehead tat.

jason2guy 09-09-2012 06:44 PM

i call him the cooler- cause when he comes around the deal is killed immediatly.
he lowballs every single thing, and not just a little.
counting cars is almost unwatchable.
pawn stars is cool, great cast, funny- sans corey "big hoss" . not camera friendly

hcoles 09-09-2012 07:03 PM

I liked the Count until he got his own show, the $$ and acting don't make sense.
Pawn stars, so far the characters are staying close to original, I still like the show.

Joe Bob 09-09-2012 07:12 PM

The guy with the horns is a tool...but Chumley is no brainiac either....

tmsautoart 09-09-2012 07:28 PM

The Counting Cars show I honestly couldn't watch a complete episode. Pawn Stars is only barely watchable because of the somewhat interesting things the get in.

Well, no..

When I first attended Porsche technical training early in instruction it was all about vocabulary and usage. The psychology is if you use "tear it down", "throw it back together", "motor" rather than engine, etc. you were mentally setting yourself up to do sloppy work.

For those who could not change their vocabulary the results were obvious. They talked like and were in fact pretty mediocre technicians.

Porsche's definition was very clear..Motors were devices that took existing energy and converted it to motion..like electrical or vacuum motors.

Engines took fuel and converted it via management systems into motion.

You would not use the language a "windshield wiper engine", "cruise control engine" and a "3.2 flat six motor". It is just pedestrian, not professional.

The Germans and Porsche were very exact in these matters. I think there is merit in the psychology to train a professional.

I don't watch PS much. When I do if Danny shows up to evaluate a automotive purchase, it can be painful. No tools, grease rags, compression gauge, flashlight or stethoscope. He points out any visual imperfections, listens to the "motor" and if it is clean or painted and not knocking..it is a great "motor". Never on his back under the car or taking any chance of getting his hands dirty and knocking his bandanna off. Drives the car around the block.."the transmission is great" or "the brakes need work". Not credible, he never pulled a dipstick.

Then the most amazing appraisal occurs, suddenly he is a automotive market expert too.

I understand PS is theater. They stage most of the deals, have the merchandise on site in advance and get the walk in "customers" to sign waivers and script the "sale" prior to video being made. But sloppy professional characters..the worst.

MM probably would give $200 for that crap Porsche engine. As a "core" it would have been worth that or more.

Engine/Motor?

Does this mean that my friends in Detroit live in Engine City or Motor City?

Some of my favorite songs can be found on Enginetown Records or Motown.

Won't be long before the name motor city will apply correctly.

I would not disagree. GM vs Porsche..motor vs engine.

"The psychology is if you use "tear it down", "throw it back together", "motor" rather than engine, etc. you were mentally setting yourself up to do sloppy work.

You could expand that to building mediocre cars too.

Uhhhh, burning gasoline DOES take existing energy and convert it to motion. (Unless you have one of those conservation of energy violation specials that conspiracy theorists go on about on the internet...) A gallon of gas has approximately 114,000 BTUs of stored energy in it.

I you think calling it a motor removes some of the elitism from the subject and you don't want want to call it that... Fine, but you don't get to redefine the English language. Leave that to the lexicographers. (If you want to look down your nose at them then that is a bird of a different colour.)

Meanwhile.....back at the ranch....

Guys pretty lippy. Would have been interesting to see what would have been said if there weren't any cameras present.
