Addicted To The Spoon
I just can't shake the habit. I gota have my fix or I start to Jones...cold, clamy and jittery....until I hit the Spoon and then I get that warm fuzzy feeling of being on cloud No. 9....and what is todays fix?
I have bin looking for a nice Springfield M1 with a SN over 6M for quite sometime...about 4 years ago I ws the underbidder at 2K on a Type 1 NM Springfield M1 that had a SN over 6M. A coupla months later I saw that one go at auction for over 5K. Now this one isn't a NM, but all the late Springfield M1's were more or less special order with a large number being NM's , as the arsenal was rebuilding WW2 M1's. This one is SN 608X,XXX...with a 3/56 barrel date (Springfield arsenal ended production on the M1 in 57 in favor of the M14) ...this one appears to be straight with a posible stock sanding? . These are kind of hard to find..and prices have bin on the rise.. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

go to odcmp.com and drool at what they offer.
M1-C M1-D are the most sought after as they were the issued sniper spoon. a company is even making the CORRECT retro optics for these. tabs if ya want somebody qualified to make one into either a real "shooter" or just "correct" with matching parts........... arringtonaccuracy.com he's built my winchester(all matching parts) m-1 carbine, my springfield custom shop super duper match, my socom, and my sons m-1a loaded. secret to any of these: 1) bedded stock(prefers mcmillian f/glass-due to hot/cold-expansion contraction of wood) 2) trigger job 3) hand fitted iron sights. remember any/all parts for any CMP/DCM match must be USGI or =.

Very sweet Tabs.
How do these shoot with a good scope? I'm ok with iron sites but the rifles I've shot always shoot better with scopes.

![]() heres a coupla things i do know: 1) they all are getting real spendy base model/loaded model/super match/custom shop model. 2) out of the box a base model will shoot 1-2" MOA. do the (3) above listed tips, and you will be at least 1/2"-1" MOA. 3) the oem springfield scope mount is ok. a QD(quick detach) scope mount is the katz azz. i can use it for hunting with a scope or just plinking, and i can remove scope for a 1000yd iron site match. then reattach scope and retain my COVETED ZERO! no fuss no muss. 4) federal 168gr BTHP are the STANDARD round for all of mine. 5) when scope installed............its heavy. YOU nor I really want to hump it chasing elk/ deer-skis. its BEST to just build a blind, hunker down, eat yer MRE's, and GLASS GLASS GLASS until kritter shows himself for the shot. when you get to the point i have, shoveling mega amounts of money and time into it, the LAST thing yer gonna wanna do is beat the hell out of the thing bouncing on a quad/jeep or a horse without a HARD CASE for it. thats why i bought a socom so i can abuse the hell out of it, and not cry into my beer when it gets covered in mud and dirt and crap all over it banging tree branches and fence posts while on quad handlebars bouncing the POO out of it. price out a custom shop super match, then price out all the goodies, then price out your optic, your optic QD mounts, all the tools, custom work by arrington accuracy.com...............and pretty soon you will find you are carrying a BANK with you . i dont EVEN want to add up my receipts. buttttttttttt...................if YOU or I want to RULE a 1000yd + area and DENY the ENEMY FOOD AND COMFORT, and have a damn good chance of taking the ENEMY ELK AND DEER HOME WITH YOU FOR DINNER..........cant think of a better way to do it than from a blind with one of these! humping them WITHOUT a scope isnt too bad, and if ya have a QD scope mount and stuff yer scope in a hard case in your pack, theres another alternative. iron sights are great, if yer young and not wearing glasses. at 55 and wearing glasses now, i'd rather use a scope any day. so once again YING/YANG.

Agreed and they went into battle with 70 rounds of ammo. None of this "spray fire downrange" crap, they were taught to shoot and that each shot had to count.
Very nice spoon Tabs!

Any one above 5.8M is more or less a Special Order M1 During and after the Korean War Springfield was rebuilding W2 production. So I would say new production during this period is highly desirabe. U probably have a better chance of finding one that is still original in this SN range.
5,73X, XXX is in the HR production SN range..it might have an SA receiver as a number were sent to HR from SA to get them into production earlier.. Also there were a large number of receivers in the 3M range that were in storage at SA after WW2, and were built up in the 50's. So an NM in that SN range is not unusual. I have a Navy Trophy NM in the 3M SN range, one thing that was unique about the Navy Trophys is that the stocks were varnished. The thing with the 03's and MI's is that so many were rebuilds, and to find an original is very very hard to find. The exception with the 03's is the 03A3...there are a lot of those in orginal conditon that are floating around.

"The M1 Garand is greatest single battle implement ever devised by man." -- General George S. Patton, Jr.
Although I’ll necessarily defer to tabs regarding all spoon matters, my late father’s SA USMC sniper 278**** -replete w/ bayonet- is a prized piece in our Second Amendment collection. The DCM subjected him to a thorough background check and having personally demonstrated marksmanship proficiency at a local range prior to its purchase. That he lawfully transported firearms aboard public transportation while earning his B.S. degree and a varsity letter on UCLA’s rifle team during ’52 & ’53 did little to sway the feds. Must be noted I’ve almost none of its original 20-round detachable magazines. The pages of documentation required for its legitimate procurement rightly enhances its keepsake and heirloom value IMHO. Seems your SN 573**** M1 was originally manufactured by Harrington & Richardson. It’s likely a desirable piece of memorabilia hardware. reference: Know Your M1 Garand Rifles by E. J. Hoffschmidt.
