IOS 6 released today

Who's getting it?

And why?

gr8fl4porsche 09-19-2012 06:36 AM

No jailbreak released yet - I will stick with 5.1 on the 4S.

I will be using iOS6 Friday when my 5 shows up.

Yep, I'll wait for a reliable jailbreak to be released before I upgrade. Doesn't look like major differences anyway.

Attended a large conference dominated by Apple users when iOS 4.0 was released and was one of a handful that did not download the update. Result - I retained a functional 3GS iPhone :)

Apple just works! LOL. (typed on my MacBook pro)...

Yep, if you don't update, your old device will work fine (though you can't update your apps or download any new ones). Once you go to the new iOS, your old equipment slows to a crawl. I can't imagine trying to load this on an iPad1.

I've got no plans to load it on my iPad3 at this point. Maybe, if other owners don't see any degrading of performance, sometime down the line...

iOS 6 will give you Siri on the iPad 3, among other things. That makes it worth it for me. But I will wait a week or so to see if there will be a iOS v. 6.1 released shortly, due to battery issues, bug fixes...etc. with v. 6.0 ... :D

IF all is well with the new os, I also plan on upgrading my iPhone 4, though the new firmware won't make much of a difference on that phone, IMHO.

More info on the iOS 6 update here

I just downloaded it and am using it on my iPad3 now. I haven't noticed any degraded performance whatsoever. Regarding the iPad1, iOS 6 isn't supported.

techweenie 09-19-2012 09:55 AM

More important release today is OSX 10.8.2

Will stand by on iOS6 for a week or so. Likely getting a 5 next month anyway and when I sell off the 4, it will likely be of more value if I don't upgrade the OS.

RedBaron 09-19-2012 02:58 PM

Upgrading my iPhone 4. Hopefully there will be a jailbreak out soon to enable Siri, turn by turn navigation and facetime using the cellular network.

Hugh R 09-19-2012 03:04 PM

I'm using a 3Gs with IOS 4.3.3. If I buy a 4G is there a jail break software for it to allow me to teather my iPad 1?

KaptKaos 09-19-2012 05:14 PM

Installed on my ipad3 and iphone 4s. iphone had a problem, had to do it twice. No data loss, and perfromance seems ok.

New Maps seemed slow at first, but used the GPS directions for the ride home tonight. Worked fine, except for a little hiccup at the end. Say good night tom-tom and magellan.

Siri is much better.

The busy send a text message function on the phone is very nice. Android has had that for years.

Do Not Disturb is really helpful, and will get lots of use from me for sure.

Maxim S 09-19-2012 05:17 PM

Actually, reviews are all saying that the iPhone4 and especially the 3GS are noticeably faster with the new update. I updated my 4, but hopefully it'll be gone on friday in favor of a 5 so it's kinda pointless.

LWJ 09-19-2012 06:42 PM

Doing my 4s currently. I am curious about the maps and Siri.

Larry

red-beard 09-19-2012 06:45 PM

Updating my 3GS. I will wait a couple of days for the 4S.

I thought it was Data plan dependant. I have a 4S and it has built in Data sharing, if you pay for that in the data plan aith AT&T

rattlsnak 09-19-2012 07:20 PM

I don't get the Siri thing. My wife uses it constantly, but I have found no reason that I have ever needed it. Everything she does with it, I can do faster on my own. But anyway, I'm going to wait a week or so on the new release also, but the Tango app has allowed face time over 3/4g/cellular for a few quite some time now and it works great.

The only time I try to use Siri is in the car. And it never works correctly

Don Plumley 09-19-2012 07:57 PM

I used siri at least a dozen times today to generate reminders. I love it.

I don't use her too much to send emails, but she is great to respond to text messages when I'm in the car (using a headset). I use the dictation feature to compose emails when I'm walking.

The killer feature is the new "Do Not Disturb", that caused me to start downloading it right now.

The downloading JUST finished....

Updating...

gprsh924 09-20-2012 01:50 AM

Updated my iPhone 4 and my iPad. So far so good, really haven't had enough time to play with either to notice too many of the changes. But at least it worked properly this time, unlike my upgrade to ios5 that wiped my phone.

widgeon13 09-20-2012 02:44 AM

iOS 6 very unexciting for anything but possibly a 4S.

slodave 09-20-2012 02:50 AM

Just remember that with the last few updates, Apple killed the possibility to unlock ATT iPhones. Really pissed me off after I spent too many hours my first night in Europe trying to figure out why I could not make a Euro SIM work.

onewhippedpuppy 09-20-2012 04:51 AM

I installed it last night on my iPhone 4. I haven't played with it much, but except for the maps looks pretty much the same. The maps looks very similar to Google with slightly better graphics. It gives on screen turn-by-turn prompts for navigation but doesn't speak them, which is pretty cheesy.

Porsche-O-Phile 09-20-2012 04:53 AM

By "unlock" do you mean jailbreak? If so that's not a correct statement - there are a number of good, easy-to-use JBs out there for iOS 5.1x including RedSn0w and Absinthe. I have the latest iOS prior to v6 and had no issues - working fine, told AT&T to take a flying leap even though it's one of "their" phones. No problems, no issues.

red-beard 09-20-2012 06:37 AM

Do not upgrade if you use the Google Maps traffic feature. It is gone!!! You will not get traffic data from the secondary roads and the traffic data in the new map is terrible!

Also, it appears that the Escort Live map is not fully functional now! Big pissed off.

Looking for a way to revert to iOS 5.0.1

red-beard 09-20-2012 06:56 AM

Google maps work around - it is web based but better than the crappy Apple maps

Google Maps Can Be Used On iOS 6 Beta, Here Is How!

jwasbury 09-20-2012 07:20 AM

Hmmn...I suppose that the masses of people downloading the new IOS could explain why AppleTV streaming was ssssllllooowwww last night?

onewhippedpuppy 09-20-2012 07:30 AM

You also have to re-download YouTube from the App Store if you want the icon. IOS 6 deletes it in a jealous rage.:D

thnx

Nokia Drive. Maps download to the phone for offline use. Probably the best map/navigation app on any mobile device today.

techweenie 09-20-2012 07:51 AM

Every new iOS version kills jailbreaks. It takes a while before the hackers break the new versions. If you're planning to get an iPhone 5, leave your current phone un-updated. It will be easier to sell on the secondary market.

It works on iPhone?

motion 09-20-2012 08:06 AM

Apple maps are coming under heavy criticism. Hmmmm... starting to rethink my plan to visit the Apple store tomorrow for new phones.

gr8fl4porsche 09-20-2012 08:12 AM

ATT will unlock your phone if you are past the initial 2 yr contract.

You can use their chat feature online. I just had them unlock a 3GS.

ATT approves the unlock, then sends a request to Apple to authorize the unlock, then you restore the iOS thru iTunes and it is unlocked. Downside now is that iOS 6 will be installed.

No - sorry for the confusion Rich. ND was exclusive to the Nokia Lumia line but will now be available on all WP8 devices. I'm just being annoying by pointing out that sometimes iOS does not "just work". In this case their maps - which IMO has always lagged behind the competition (Google). Sure there is an app for that...but Apple has recognized the disparity and is now trying to close the gap. I'm sure they will.

I do agree that traffic data is not as complete, but Apple maps does give you icons (and info) for road construction and accidents while Google maps does not.

gprsh924 09-20-2012 09:23 AM

I'm not happy that I now have to use a third party app for transit directions. It was much easier when it was integrated into Google Maps.

It is not an improvement! The traffic speed data on secondary roads is fantastic, when you want to get around some issue on the freeways.
