Ar-10
Really really want!
I've been looking over the specs and I really like the Armalite version with 7075-T6 forged reciever. A lot of the cheaper guys are using 6061-T6, which is a fine material, but about 3/5ths the strength. Are there any other manufacturers to consider?

CMMG/DPMS/Knights/Others. Probably the most common lower out there (there is no standard for the .308 AR like there is for the AR-15). Magpul mags are under $20 and there are a wide variety of uppers that fit.
The Armalites use M14 mags. Wouldn't you rather be hunting for targets rather than magazines? There are hundreds, if not thousands, of cheap-ass AR15 lowers out there that are holding up to the recoil of a .50BMG upper with no problems. IMHO the alloy used is just a gimmck.

CMMG guys are using 6061-T6 for the reciever, which is cheaper and lower strength.
DPMS uses extruded 7029-T6 which is closer to 7075, but still less strong. They also do not forge the billet. Knights must be made out of platinum! They want almost $5K for one!

Look at the RRA LAR-8 - takes cheap and readily available FAL mags

I have never seen nor heard of a metallic AR lower failure of any kind. I shoot .458 SOCOM through a Rock River upper mounted on a polymer lower made by Cavalry Arms. Several hundred HOT rounds through it and the fit is still tight with zero deformation anywhere. Hell, you can confidently mount a .50BMG upper on a standard (much less sturdy) AR-15 lower without fear of damage. What you want is a lower that uses the Knights pattern (Magpul magazine compatible). Lower strength is not a concern, unless you plan to use your rifle as a club--in which case your barrel will bend first anyway. Using the Rock River lower will limit you to RRA components.

Yes, most are single-shot bolt action. However, there are even magazine fed ones:

What is the advantage of the Magpul design? I have 10+ M14/M1A magazines...

I've shot AR-15's, and M-1 carbines. (LOVE that M-1 carbine, tons of fun, working on justification for owning one.) I've also shot a 760 Remington in 30-06. I'm not a great shot, but I'm not terrible. With that 760 I was very disapointed with my accuracy when shooting offhand and trying for quick follow-up shots. Kind of like Hickock45 shooting in the backyard at different bullseyes, except he can hit those quick follow-up shots. I haven't shot an AR-10, and maybe the platform just keeps you on target, but offhand a .308/.30-06 pushes me around. It isn't at all like the AR-15/M-1 carbine that allows me to bang away. Are you guys able to shoot the larger caliber ARs accurately and quickly offhand at a distance?

I've been reading on the advantage of the AR style receiver and stock. By keeping the stock inline with the barrel, there is less tendancy for the muzzle to climb after the shot.

So, how quick and accurate are the offhand follow-ups with the M-1A? I'm not convinced I'm quicker with a pump than a bolt when accuracy counts.

The Armalite is the best value, from what I have seen.
