Your 911 and Chip Foose........

The question is....... would you want Chip Foose and crew to "overhaul" your 911? Keeping in mind that this would involve a complete bare metal paint job, upgraded suspension, new brakes, custom wheels, custom interior and some kind of pumped up drivetrain. Would you be willing to forego "doing it yourself" to let Foose and company take a shot? One thing is certain, it would be different! Let me hear your thoughts.

Based on what they typically do, ie big chrome wheels, pinstripes, gaudy interiors, I'd say no.

But they DO always put a nice engine in the cars, though. I'd still say no.

The one time the lack of wheel choices would work in you favor.

IMO wheel choice is the one thing they consistently get wrong.

Period cars generally look "wrong" with todays options.

Hey why not? If you didn't like what he did you could always change it afterwards.

Widebody -- nice try dropping the F-bomb. You are banned for 1 day. See you tomorrow...

That said, I'd rather have Foose work on my car than that Exhibit guy ("Pimp my ride")...

Just sayin'

I'll be the outlier here and say that I typically like what Foose does. Yes, they are typically in the retromod theme vs a straight restoration, but he typically uses high quality components and addresses the entire car, not just a pretty paint job and a big stereo system as with some of these shows. Most of his projects end up with rebuilt suspension, big brakes, brand new crate motor, new/rebuilt transmission, etc. He also seems to take the desires of the owner into account, which is what really matters. I'd let him give my 911 a go, why not?

Well said. I like most of what he does as well. I don't understand the negative feelings about Foose on this forum.

Perhaps posting a wide body of his work would convince the naysayers.

Not that I tend to remember what I don't like first, but a few examples of what are considered his successes would help put it all in context.

In general, my impression is that he likes to open up boxes and leave you wondering about his intent. This is not the same as ambiguous or indecisive, but the thought of; "what's the point of doing that?" While at the same time not being either offended nor excited about it is the end result.

There is an intellectual, artistic and physiological aspect to his work, but it's often answering the question nobody asked, leaving the viewer quite puzzled about all the time, energy and money spent.

The word futile comes to mind.

Foose is futile in my opinion.

Although I respect Chip Foose's skills as an artist and customizer, I would never want his crew to "overhaul" any of my cars. I remember reading a piece somewhere by a guy who'd been "overhauled" and he said that there were several details that were half-assed on his particular car. I guess you'd have to expect that when a re-build that would normally take several months or more to complete is jammed thru in a week. I think the article also mentioned that the "mark" had to sign some sort of agreement stating that they wouldn't alter the appearance of the vehicle, or sell it, for some specified length of time. This may or may not be totally factual...it was quite some time ago that I remember reading it. What would happen if you didn't agree after the fact...would they just keep your car? How could that be legal? Foose must have some sort of contract in place before spending his time and the sponsor's money on one of these overhauls.
All that aside, it was nice to see that the show never degenerated to the point where everybody spent more time arguing with each other than working on the project.

not a 911, but he could do my 914, but only if my wife could shoot him if he did not follow intructions and put a SBC in it rather than a 3.6 swap.

I also like his designs and don't understand all the negativity... IMHO the over the top wheels are just for TV ratings (remember spinners?).

I also think if you asked (presuming you didn't do the TV thing and just drove your car into his shop) he would do up some nice Conservative wheels and leave the booming stereo out of the mix.

I really like Chip Foose's work and think that he makes great efforts to determine what people want before he does the work. Some cars remain almost bone stock with minor bolt-on upgrades, others are full customs.

As for my 911, well it's a $3,500 car, and my husband knows exactly what I would do with it. When I got it back from Foose, it would be an RS tribute car with working a/c, Elephant suspension, sunroof delete, almost no stereo, a set of billet knock-off FOOSE Fuchs (finished in matte - 17") and a Henry Schmidt engine.

Let Foose work on my car? Hell yes.

I'd let them overhaul my ride. I think he would respect the heritage of the 911 and not go over the top. But I am certain I would swap out whatever wheels he would choose. I never agree with his wheel choice/tastes.

Foose is the youngest man to ever be inducted into the Hot Rod Hall of Fame. He has been involved seven different America's Most Beautiful Roadster award winners. He has also won the Ridler award twice and the Goodguys Street Rod of the Year eight times.

What else does he need to do to prove himself?

He doesn't have to prove anything to me.

Just not my cup of tea, although he does stimulate a little interest. Mostly questions of "why" though.

Why does not equal WTF, please don't take it that way.

Again, just speaking for myself.
