who knows how to work with leather? knife sheath.

i took some knives in to get sharpened..

well, a sheath apparently bounced out of my door pocket and is now lost. any fixed blade is just about useless without a sheath, so i sucked it up and bought a new one. man, i got hosed!! with shipping, i bet the sheath was $15 less than i paid for the knife AND sheath several years ago.. (i feel dirty)

got me thinking. i have other knifes i need to have sheaths made. how hard can it be? fold some leather over, and stitch it up..right? i dont need belt loops or anything.

i dont appear to have a TANDY leather store anywhere near. any tips?

Vash,

Are you asking where you can get leather? or how to make a sheath?

If you need leather cheap go to a thrift store and buy an old leather jacket or a U-pull-it yard and cut a section from a leather seat. Ewe, horible thought don't use it for your good kitchen knives you might catch something.

Didn't someone buy some old women's boots at goodwill to make a cheap steering wheel cover? Shawn perhaps?

For a knife sheath you want some tough leather. Not something soft like what would be used for a jacket. Closer to raw-hide instead of goat skin. You want it to hold form and not bend/cut easy. Imagine pushing your knife into the sheath and the sheath is bent/curled and the knife punctures right through. I've seen it happen

A good leather person at a shoe shop can do this.

This is true. A knife I have purchased lately came with a nylon (I guess that is what the matterial was) sheath with a thin plastic lining. I asume to add rigidity and protection for the nylon.

Maybe you can get some scrap leather from a saddle shop. I use thick saddle leather for sheathes and pistol holsters. The sheath is 1 layer on each side of the blade and 1 layer in the center cutout where the blade goes. Near the thick section of the blade near the handle there is actually a 4th layer to build up the thickness so as to not squeeze the blade tight. There are brass rivets at the 3 high stress areas and then the whole thing is double hand sticked through and through with waxed nylon thread.

Take a pic of one of the knives you want a sheath for with basic blade measurements and I'll make you one.

Gassy is the man!!

i just want to thank you. i love it. my upholstery in my truck loves it. my hunting backpack loves it..the skin on my fingers love it.

all these things are safe from the keen edge on this knife. it is my ugly but good, (we call it UBG at camp) butcher knife i use to break down large hooved creatures into steaks. haha.

the thing fits really nice. thanks GASSY! you saved me from my newspaper and duct tape sheath.

I guess I'm a little late to the party, but for any other interested parties, check out KnifeKits.com™ : Knife & Gun Making Supplies and Tools for several options for sheath-making kits and supplies in both leather and kydex. I haven't worked with leather, but if you're looking for a DIY project, kydex is really easy to work with and very forgiving. You can heat it, mold it, re-heat it and re-mold it infinitely, apparently. I've made a few sheaths so far using a heat gun as my heat source, works fine. It's available in a variety of colors and patterns. There are some great tutorials on youtube.

This one took less than an hour while teaching my brother the process. I can probably do a simple one in a half hour.

Making sheaths/holsters...

Speaking of sheaths...I have thought many times about making holsters & sheaths for some of my toys.
Here's a sheath that I bought somewhere years ago - seems not too hard to make.
.
Neat, eh?
