My favorite quote from him:
Winston Churchill had been drinking heavily at a party when he bumped into Bessie Braddock, a Socialist Member of Parliament. “Mr. Churchill, you are drunk,” Braddock said harshly. Churchill paused and said, “And Bessie, you are ugly. You are very ugly. I’ll be sober in the morning.”

Winston Churchill also touted Margaret Thatcher. Once, Thatcher remarked, 'If you were my husband, I would put poison in your coffe.' Churchill, with his quick wit, replied, 'Madam, if you were my wife, I would drink it.'

George Bernard Shaw once sent him two tickets for the opening night of one of his plays with the note "Bring a friend - if you have one."
Churchill sent them back to Shaw with the note "Can't make the opening. Please send tickets for following night - if there is one."

That wasn't Margaret Thatcher, she wasn't even a Parliamentarian when Churchill died. It was a famous quote of his, I think relating to Nancy Astor the American that became one of the UK's first female Members of Parliament.

Just watched a Charlie Rose the other night with four guests discussing Churchill. Three Brit historians and the fourth guest was Churchill's granddaughter. Fascinating. Also read William Manchester's bio of Churchill years ago.

Read the book Winston and Franklin. It was about their relationship. Interesting man all around. IMHO he was the single leader that saved Western Civilization.
And it was Lady Astor.

I have a water color painting of Winston Churchill in our family room. My friend painted it for me because she knew he is one of my heroes...

He was the true "LAST LION"
Flawed in many ways but perfectly suited for his moment --a very big moment. A wartime leader who saw all sides for what they were. Not so great in peace time. But still one of the giants of the 20th century. M

The three volume set of the Last Lion is essential reading.
As is A History of the English-Speaking Peoples by Churchill. The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter. Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy. And My favorite given the time and place: Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be free and life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fall, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth lasts for a thousand years, men will still say, “This was their finest hour!”

This is an amazing work. I read it many years ago, and it is high on my list of things to re-read. It is six or eight volumes of the history of England from the earliest times. What makes it so remarkable is it's immediacy, accuracy and readability. Churchill only worked on it in the morning in his bathrobe, and dictated the entire thing to his secretary, over a period of several years. Even more amazing he did so while drinking large amounts of champagne and brandy each morning. Perhaps most amazing of all is that his biographers tell us the manuscript he dictated required only minor changes before printing. Few things speak more for the prodigious genius of this man, who could dictate the whole immensely complex history of the English people off the top of his head! A stunning achievement from a true giant among men.

Great topic. The funeral of Churchill was a defining moment(I think it was in 1965) much like the death of John F Kennedy. I will always remember the barge that took Churchill's body up the River Thames to his resting place. As mentioned above a savior of the world. As an aside I am currently reading Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin who is another person who had a huge impact on the development of his part of the world.
