I haven't gotten into a lot of commands yet was Siri, but the voice dictation for text and post something on things like that has been really good

I've mentioned it before - why can't they make an iPhone competitor that isn't so damn big? If I can't carry it in athletic shorts, I won't buy it. Not everyone wants to carry around a tablet in their pocket.

"is that a tablet in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?"

Breaking news: "According to a New York Times published on Thursday, however, Google will update its mobile Maps website with Street View within two weeks, bringing iOS users an even more robust alternative to the widely criticized Apple Maps app."

I will agree with you regarding form factor. The iphone is an ideal size. I am still not used to the dinner plate sized S3...

The software though seems to have a lot more "tweakability", which for a techno guy like me is awesome.

In mail, why did they change spam to junk? That drives me crazy.

jyl 09-28-2012 07:08 AM

What did they do with mail?

Backup is not needed, and resyncing is not necessary.

I upgraded my iPhone4 from iOS 5.1 to iOS 6 without needing to backup everything, and without having to recsync anything -- all my music, notes, settings remained the same. Don't know why people are saying this about the upgrade...

One improvement I saw: the moved the bluetooth switch higher up in the Settings App: it is on the first 'page' and you don't have to drill down to the "General" section. Helpful for those who turn off bt when not in use to save battery life. (I can get 2 days out of a single battery charge! :D )

Thanks! I just turned mine off. Does it constantly search for BT connections, using a lot of juice?

Nothing, just changes the folder name from spam to junk. Why, spam was fine with me.

Here is another question. Does iOS6 take up more storage than iOS5? My iPhone 4S won't let me upgrade since I have only 1.5GB free and it needs 2.5GB to install. Okay, I can delete 1GB of stuff. But I'd like to add those apps and music back after iOS6 is installed. This also makes me wonder if I need to plan on a 32GB iPhone 5 instead of the 16GB I usually get.

gr8fl4porsche 09-28-2012 10:41 AM

I found 16g too small if you have some music, a few movies, lots of photos and apps.

Or

Is it a good thing to do even though I'm not getting a 5 yet

Yes, it does. I think it polls for bt devices regularly -- not sure what the interval is, but it seems to be less than a minute. Every bit helps.

Some other tips:
- Turn off auto-brightness, and adjust the brightness down to below 50%
- Turn off location services for apps that really don't need them, such as games, web browsers, news apps like AP Mobile...etc.
- Turn off notifications for apps you need to be notified on.
- Close apps when you are finished with them (double click home, hold an App until it wiggles, and hit all the red minus signs to close the apps)
- Turn off integration of contracts with apps such as Mapquest..etc. (In Privacy settings)
- Fetch new mail hourly instead of instant or push
- Log out of applications (don't just shut down the app) such as Facebook when done. Simply shutting down, but not logging off means location services and notifications will still be active, and using battery life.
- If you really want to save battery life, switch the phone to Airplane mode when you know you won't be expecting calls/emails/texts..etc. (Ex: if you are taking a long motorcycle ride and won't be accessing the phone)

I get about 2 days of life out of a full charge (1.5 year old iphone4), but I use my iphone minimally

jyl 09-28-2012 04:35 PM

I am a dolt, to be sure, but I had no idea iOS mail app had/has a junk filter. And I still can't find it! I'd sure like to know how to do this.

"Closing" apps is pointless unless you are running 50 apps.

Apps don't background in the sense you think they do, it's faux multitasking, they suspend/hibernate which is why it takes a lot of "background" apps to affect battery life.

FWIW I don't do any of that and get 2 days of use out of my 4.

I have 5 mail accounts set to fetch every 15 minutes.

In my experience the biggest battery killer is signal strength/availability.

In FL I get a full day, but just barely.

In CA I get a day.

In NY/NJ I always need to charge around 4-5 pm.

In TX, 2 days is normal.

jeffgrant 09-28-2012 08:54 PM

Blue tooth, wi-fi, and screen brightness are by far the biggest killers of battery.

Reduce the screen brightness as much as you can, and kill the other stuff when not in use, and that's the best thing you can do to prolong your phone's charge.

slodave 09-28-2012 09:10 PM

My 4 lasts 3 or 4 days in a full charge. Angry Birds can reduce that time to a few hours. :D

Other than that, normal texting, FB, PP, and calls give me a few days.

Hows everyone feel about 6.01? safe to make the jump to 6 on my 4s and ipad3?
