>First and foremost are you testing the connectivity at the ends with the same computer?

Yes. Not being a net guru I did not use DOS or anything, just ran speedtest from the web at the end of each cable with the same laptop. Got super consistent results on all wires except the long one...

>After that - the hubs. Hubs are repeaters.

Gotcha, the hub is gone, it was ancient anyway, and I have a couple of loaner switches to try...

>HAve you tested BEFORE the hub at the end of that long cable?

Yes, I had 24 at the modem, but only 12 at the end of the long cable. Before the hub. After the hub I only get 5 - regardless of how many devices were plugged into the hub. The hub is gone...dead...dusted.. for years all I had was 5 while paying for 20, %$#%$#... Stupid...

>I think you said you did - at that point I would question the integrity of that cable.

Yup. I did not know Ethernet cables could partially fail or be slower, I thought it was all or nothing... I'm testing it tonight as soon as I get home, I got fancy equipment form my network guys and a replacement cable just in case...

>Regarding the 'N' wireless device - Something can be labeled 'N' and support the standard easily but not actually be able to do it. What are your expectations on that wireless?

I bought that model based on the recommendation from one of the network guys at work. I called him today and had him run the same test on his, he said he got 20+ on his freaking tablet, mine gets 3 on a good day, with a tail wind ;-)

So I'll flash it, with the latest firmware, reset it, kill all firewalls, and.... get rid of it if there are no improvements... My expectations are very low, I just want to beat 5 wired and 1-3 wireless - I'm running at 20% of my modem's output right now ;-) Even a B/G unit should beat that - actually the modem's got B-G on board (turned off so I can use my N router) and when I turned it back on I got 6-7 that way, so my N unit is definitely morphing into a frisbee if it does not shape up !

Thanks !

Okay.... Progress... Retested all ports at the modem, all @ 24...
Retested the long cable with the borrowed tester, it checked out. I tried again, still good... Wire pairing, noise, attenuation, it all passed... except the tester tries to guess the length of the cable, and it sucks at that ;-)

Re-tested at the end of that long cable, got 24 !!! No longer 12... Soooo, I'm pretty sure I wasn't drunk yesterday, so maybe that tester reset something, or the change of port at the modem did anything (but they all checked out at 24) - I'm still very confused but I don't care... We're good there...

Got the latest TPlink router firmware, reset it, default settings, no firewall, but this supposed "N" router still only goes to 3 ! So it's a frisbee... Back to linksys....

Rechecked the upstairs "switch" - it says it is a switch not a hub, my bad, I thought it was a hub because it could act like one... still limited to 5... But, a quick research revealed time flies faster than I thought: the damn thing is a 10y old Microsoft base station, no firmware has existed for it for over 8 years... So that's a frisbee too now... Tomorrow I'm buying a new wireless router from a known brand and a nice new modern switch. It's looking promising...
