6 year old Porsche component, major structural failure.

Simply unacceptable from a premium brand ;)

I think there are signs of abuse there.

mikester 09-30-2012 10:14 PM

Did you follow service recommendations?

porsche4life 09-30-2012 10:15 PM

Lube it properly and this wouldn't happen...

Jim Bremner 09-30-2012 10:22 PM

wasn't serviced with the proper tool.

Jrboulder 09-30-2012 10:30 PM

I hear Wayne's working on a retrofit kit and there's a class action lawsuit in the pipeline.

Noah930 09-30-2012 10:34 PM

Has it ever been rebuilt by MotorMeister?

tevake 09-30-2012 11:50 PM

This is meant to be a sports car key fob. Read light, agile, performance oriented.
Its obviously over loaded, way too many keys. Operating beyond design specs = failure.
You brought this all on yourself.

Cheers Richard

My thoughts entirely.

But hey, HD... worry not, because all you need to do is drop that thing off at the upholstery shop and they can fix you up with a heavy duty reman.

id10t 10-01-2012 08:43 AM

My Dad's original key ring is designed very similar and holding up well. Then again, its spent more of than half of its life sitting on a shelf as opposed to being in a pocket or the ignition.

vash 10-01-2012 08:54 AM

i think the FOB is just trying to get away from all those "house" keys. :)

Mrmerlin 10-01-2012 09:35 AM

The key to your success will be one key on the ring

JAR0023 10-01-2012 12:57 PM

That's enough keys to make a janitor jealous.

HD, I'm not trying to turn this into one of those epic "yours is a modern mass produced factory.... and mine's an old classic REAL one built by engineers..." mass-debate.

BUT it is rather interesting that after decades of abuse (carrying house keys, lost in the garage, jeans pocket crammed in with mobile phone, in pocket while on hot date...) it shows no signs of distress and is crying out for track time.

It is trying to escape - when was the last time that poor key fob was even close to a Porsche key....

wdfifteen 10-01-2012 01:29 PM

All those keys! Do you work in a prison?

I'll guess landlord, I have a ring of keys like that for a building as well.

MBAtarga 10-01-2012 01:49 PM

Did you get a PPI before purchase?

applies to Italian makes only - Porsche key fobs need to survive 24 hr endurance races -- race after race... this one didn't

GWN7 10-01-2012 02:23 PM

For that many keys you need this:

cstreit 10-01-2012 03:10 PM

Those aren't factory keys.

Warranty voided. Tough luck pal.

Zeke 10-01-2012 04:49 PM

I don't think any key fob was ever manufactured at Porsche AG. Therefore, the discussion is moot.
That thing probably came from Beverly Hills Motor Accessories or Automotion.

Good eye, no pcar key.

ckissick 10-01-2012 06:51 PM

That'll buff right out.

redstrosekNic 10-01-2012 07:31 PM

It's a shame, as none of the mechanical updates seem to be installed...

mreid 10-01-2012 07:57 PM

I think there was a recall. Didn't you get it?

911 Rod 10-02-2012 07:33 AM

I could see this if it was water cooled .....but air cooled? Very rare.

Tervuren 10-02-2012 12:18 PM

Mine lasted just fine, until I added multiple keys.

Jrboulder 10-02-2012 12:49 PM

Well at least it doesn't leak

HardDrive 10-02-2012 12:55 PM

I've got a call into Porsche North America about a possible good will repair. I have to say, I was really put off by some of the unprofessional comments from the lady on the phone. She didn't seem to feel my problem was serious enough to warrant opening a problem ticket in their system. Ferdinand would be rolling over in his grave if he knew how poorly I am being treated.

Bill Douglas 10-02-2012 01:06 PM

Maybe write a formal letter to the manufacturer.

Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG
Porscheplatz 1
D - 70435 Stuttgart
China.
