So BORED at Work
 

Venting a little here, so bear with me. I moved into a position of substantially greater responsibility a few months ago, and did so with great anticipation. After getting into it, I'm bored out of my mind. For a little background, I SUCK at relaxing. I am on the go all day long, which is both a blessing and a curse. I move quickly at everything that I do, I'm one of those people often described as only having one speed. I am at my best when totally buried in work, and the more pressure the better. When I don't have a heavy workload or pressure, I tend to quickly lose interest and drift away, which is where I'm at right now.

I'm in a position where everything has a lag. Assign a task, wait for a week for a response because that shared resource has other priorities. I personally am doing far more work than is typical for my position just to keep busy. The work is mundane, not technically challenging, and frankly not all that interesting. I've requested additional work, which yielded a project that is currently even slower paced. I'm trying to see the silver lining, which is that I can work 8 hours then head home for the day, but deep down it's driving me insane which is spilling over into my family time.

Anyone else have a similar problem? Other than getting a new job or drinking heavily, any thoughts on how to stay focused and engaged when bored at work? I plan to talk with my boss about it (again), but am concerned about the result because I don't know what he can give me of interest. Busy work is probably even worse than having no work at all.

Don't ask your boss what he can "give you".

Find projects/programs where you can contribute and present a case for why you should.

Startup an online business and nurture it while at work... if your company allows such a thing.

I was where you are once. So I went for another promotion, got it and now I wish I was bored again....

Haven't found anything to successfully combat the boredom, however. Just a lot of surfing, unfortunately. Otherwise it is just hurry up and wait around here.

Find what needs to be done, and do it. How can someone be bored at work? Sorry, I don't get it.

What latitude do you have?

I used to walk the factory floor when I had slack time at the Sikorsky Factory. I learned more getting out in the gear shops, assembly, etc. than I ever did in the fleet.

Look around, find out what they'll let you do.

That and take classes if you can, get your quals.

Sikorsky?!

We have a company here in town, Erickson Air Crane, that takes clapped out Sikorsky's and builds them into wildfire fighting helicopters (or logging, heavy lift, etc)! I got a pretty exensive tour of their facility and their "bone yard." The facility takes them in as beaters at one end, dismantles them completely, fully refurbishes them, and out the other end is a flying fire-fighting helicopter!

But the boneyard is the best. Those helicopters are waiting their turn at restoration. Busted down, inoperable, scavanged, even with bullet holes in them. Some real, real interesting stories in that bunch if they could talk, Extremely cool place!!!

Thanks guys, like I said this was 90% rant, mostly just because this job has been a letdown. I always enjoy your responses here, lots of good thoughts.

Paul, sadly I'm no longer near airplanes so that I can easily wander. I did a lot of that in the past and learned a LOT.

Ericson is great...superb rep, hires excellent pilots and staff.

Me, too! If I get close, Angela, I'd appreciate any POC to get a tour.

I was the Chief Government Test Pilot at the Sikorsky Factory in Bridgeport, Ct for three years in the mid to late '90's. It remains the best job I have ever held. My office was on the second deck and overlooked the flight field, often with 20 Blackhawks, 5 Seahawks and a smattering of 53E's just waiting for my tender touch.

The best thing I did at the factory was to pick a Blawkhawk Bureau Number and track it everyday (actually go see it on whichever line it was on) from the first rivet until I flew it on it's first hop.

I even tracked the transmission, etc.

What a great place.

I get to look out my window during fire season here and watch the Ericson folks and their fire fighting helicopters take off, land, do maintenance etc. It's cool as hell I think.
