Spoon shooters, and Lubey

As I was cleaning the spoons the other day, and getting sick from the fumes, I thought there had to be a better way. After I lit a smoke, and got the taste of Hoppe's No. 9 in my mouth for a week, I started searching. Has anyone here used Frog lube? It's completely bio degradable, non toxic, registered as a food grade lubricant, and supposedly smells like wintergreen life savers.

After doing an intensive search on the web, it seems the people that try it, love it. The people that haven't, make fun of it. I saw a video of a guy that cleaned an AR 15 without any cleaners, and just dry patches on the parts that he used Frog Lube on. I'm meticulous about my spoons, and especially hate cleaning all the nooks and crannies from the mini 14. there's got to be a better way than spending an afternoon on it.

So, again, has anyone tried it? Know what's in it? has any reason NOT to try it? It's not available locally, so before I send off for it, I'd like to know more first hand eaperiences about it.

No, I haven't tried it.

This thread is like a cross between our Motor Oil thread and PARF: Militec and Froglube claims - Calguns.net

Enjoy!

Funny you linked that. I was just reading it before I posted this. It seems this Peter W. bush guy wants UVTactical to hold his hand, pat him on the bottom, and tell him the world really IS a perfect place.

I have heard of it! Some love it will others claim it gums up. The wintergreen is a popular scent - designed a new wire rope dressing for under ground skip lines - scented it with wintergreen to mask the normal smell. Guys love it - says it smells like Skoal. Oil of wintergreen isnt cheap but it doesn't take much.

i will have to look into this for you and get back. If its veg based it is prolly an oleic acid type.

How can any God fearin', mom and apple pie, patriotic American shooter not just love the smell of Hoppe's #9? Son, you must be one of them thar com-yune-ists...

Seriously, though, I can't remember the last time I spent more than five minutes cleaning any one gun. #9, Shooters' Choice, whatever was in the goodie bag at the last match. I think more guns are "worn out" and damaged by overzealous cleaning than actual shooting.

3 things that screw with functions of spoons:

1) dirt
2) rust
3)freezing cold

in az. i can get all 3.

i have been doing mine with ROBAR for years now. most not all get the treatment. it aint cheap...........but it lasts for evar and clean up is a breeze. its teflon impregnation of all metal surfaces. look up ROBAR for complete explanation.

hoppes #9

shooters choice

sweets 7.62

for cleaners

and for lube

militec and remlube or even CLP.

i live in a damn dirty dusty area in comparison to most. you learn real quick to carry q-tips,swabs,bore brush. and use the least amount of lube.

i have watched and read and spoke with iraq/afghan vets on what worked best, and the above is pretty much it.

over lube attracts dust period.

on a new rifle spoon i tear it apart, q-tip all shipping grease off, relube with one of the above and go shooting. if im really OCD i will go to range , foul barrel with a coupla shots, place ice cold rag on barrel to cool, when cool take my 3 shot group, repeat. figure out what flavor groups best. always bring 3 flavas.

semi auto pistols when new or rebuilt get sighting rds from cold clean barrels then 200rds as fast as i can unload/load mags. come home, wipe down, run bore snake down its throat, and back in the safe.

if its been on my side for a 10 hunt and beat to hell like myself..........i'll tear it apart some and do an armorers clean. but since i dont take .45's or 9mm's hunting anymore, that leaves .357 and .44 revolvers and their brain dead simple to clean when really really dirty.

i always carry the caliber bore snake i have. when bored if i have shot anything, i will run it thru just for grins and a warm fuzzy.

i also always try and tape my barrels when rain or snow hits to keep moisture out.

I have not used frog but do use lots of #9, brake cleaner, CLP. The only reasonable advise I can offer is to stop smoking.

Thanks Lube! It's supposed to be 100% plant based.

Jeff, I AM from Illinois. They are trying their best to go that way. I'm still using #9, but the smell is just gawdawful. That, and used rear end lube. I'm probably one of those over zealous types as well.

Odd Job, the biggest problem we have here is heat, and lots of humidity. I always take my whole cleaning kit to the range, clean out the barrel before I leave, then a good cleaning when I get home.

David, seems like we use the same things. All but the Camels, and you're right about those.

yeah july/august here are hell with monsoon rain and humidity and 100 bazzillion degree out.

all the moisture is especially bad on spoons in safes.

buy some dessiccant from cabelas or bass pro for inside yer safe. sucks all the moisture out of the confined airspace and keeps spoons dry.

never use WD-40 on a spoon or i will kick yer AZZ!

throw it away or use it on yer lawnmower ONLY!

wd-40 is a HUGE GIGANTIC NO NO AROUND SPOONS!

Or switch from Marlboro Hoppes #9 to Virginia Slims .

ps: Casual smoker since college...beer in one hand meant a cig in the other (and then I turned into a chain-smoker...I was psychologically hooked for sure). Haven't had one for a couple of years now.

I have owned and used spoons since I was a boy (I am 46). My spoons that actully get used often only get cleaned/lubed when they need it. The previous two summers, I shot my Glock sometimes every day practicing IDPA shooting at my home range. I only typically cleaned it about twice each summer after several thousand rounds fired. I know folks who clean them even less than that. Cleaning spotless and oiling after each use is simply not needed unless you get dirt or water in it in the field.

The only guns I own that get cleaned more often are my target .22 handguns when I am doing a winter bullseye league. The only reason I clean them once per week then is so that my massaged light trigger assemblies are spotless and lubed to perfection for competitive reasons.

Folks who strip and clean after every single short range session are wasting their time.

That said.... I love the smell of Hoppes #9 and can appreciate the idea of spending a winter afternoon in the shop massaging one of my favorite spoons.

#9 is shooters perfume. Try ballistol it's inert as well. It does smell funny though. I second the stop smoking part.

OK, is it really a clubhouse rule that we say "spoon". Last time I checked, adults shoot bullets with guns... Aw, never mind.

Actually it is. "Gun" gets shot down by some people's web filters at their work. Humans like Guns and Bullets, but some computer programs don't.

My buddy at church swears by Frog Lube, but I use Krud Kutter to clean and Gibbs to lube and Rig grease to put a very light coat of grease on metal parts that come into contact with other metal parts (slide, etc..._.

I spent some time on the interwebs reading both proponents and naysayers of Frog Lube.

I decided to buy some. I purchased a "kit" that had the solid and liquid FL and some other trinkets in the package.

After two weekends of working with the stuff on a wide variety of guns (son's 870, Browning Hi-power, Kimber 45 Desert, .22 upper for a AR-15, Ruger Vacarro, Ruger .22 Mk II and Single Six) I can say that it works as well as anything I have ever used, in some ways better.

What will make me change from all the other stuff I have used over the years is the fact that it is non toxic, doesn't smell and is a breeze to use.

I'll see what happens long term.
