my brother adopted a shepard mix. i have yet to even pet this dog. it is wary and very very scared. it has a 10 foot no-fly zone that i cannot approach.
having said that..his wired hair pointer is really teaching it the ropes..i bet i will be able to pet the dog this holiday.. hate to say it, but two dogs is really a good idea. i could use a second one..but no way.

all our dogs have been rescues from the pound. Two pure breds, several mixes, and a couple hybrids. Never disappointed.
Save a life and avoid the puppy mills

We have a Weimeraner. She was a rescue dog. Her best canine friend is Rhodesian Ridgeback. They play semi-rough (chasing, tackling, wrestling), but it's always play.
Our dog is 65 lbs. Short hair. Smart. Only barks at intruders (but stops with a squirt bottle). Super loyal (to a fault). Obedient. She's a little neurotic/high strung, as is par for the breed. But she's mellowed out a lot since we've had her.

Get one from a shelter - they're the best!
Or there are many in foster homes who are available. Do not buy from a breeder...they are only in it for the money...basterds! Ridgebacks are a wonderful breed and great companions. Best thing I ever did was get a second dog. I highly recommended it! ![]() ![]() ![]()

Second the Weimeraner. Great dogs.
The wife went for a standard poodle - meets most of your requirements but for the coat/maintenance. He's 65# of muscle, brain and hair. A money pit if you paid someone else to groom him... A very contrarian choice these days and always gets attention, good and not so good. Weimeraner. Big, but not too big. Athletic, but not neurotic. Smart. Short coat. Win!

Rescue. Rescue.Rescue. Do you have the need to be a hero? Then go fight a fire or rescue someone. Go be a hero. Adopting a dog or cat from a shelter does not make you a hero. You are not rescuing anything. You cannot possibly be the center of the universe because there is no such thing. STOP! If you do as before mentioned you are a good person. You have saved an animal from possible other consequences. But if this causes you the need to refer to yourself as someone who has "rescued" an animal please go pat yourself on the back somewhere else.

Easiest question all day....another Ridgeback, for sure! I had two of them, Mason and Moses, for 13 years. They are both gone now, and I miss them both everyday. They are a special breed. We have two new dogs now, who are just fine, but they are not Ridgebacks.
RIP Mason and Moses. JA

Don't let that laid back demeanor of this Dale fool you. It looks like he has been out all night chasin anything that moved in his territory...and is now getting his beauty sleep so he can go out again and PARTAY all night with the local wildlife.
You got 20 acres then you need a coupla Airedales as they are active dogs...smart, fearless, loyal, friendly, wants to be apart of the family and protective of the family. U really can not want a better dog than an Airedale. If I had the acreage that you do I would have 3 or 4 Dales, cause NOTHIN is comin on your property man nor beast. Dales are great hunters and watch dogs... Only thing is that they think they are smarter than you, and as such have a mind of their own

Around here we can't leave our dogs run without supervision because they WOULD get into mischief. Running deer, exploring horse/ sheep pastures, etc., would all be on the "to do" list. We have six wooded acres for them to enjoy and outside those acres they are fine off lease if we're present. People around here have shot well loved family dogs for simply being in the same field as a flock of sheep. We have a Border Collie cross and a sort of terrier that we picked up while on a trip to the Baja. It's been my observation that the BC cross immediately was a nicer dog once we had the second one also, having a male and a female seems to make the "top dog" adjustment period much shorter. Cheers
