Considering getting another dog. What kind?
 

Wolverine needs a playmate. He is a 7 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback with a LOT of energy! He is my biking and hiking companion several times a week but he needs more. We live on 20 wooded acres so there is plenty of room for him to run, but he needs something to run with besides me!

Another Ridgeback is on top of the list, but I want to consider other (smaller) breeds. Initial criteria are: short hair, no barking, smart, obedient, loyal and medium sized. All these are Ridgeback characteristics except the size!!

We will probably end up with another Ridgeback, but just wanted to get opinions on what else is out there.

All suggestions appreciated!

A "standard" Schnauzer would fit the bill. Great dogs, loyal and smart but you need to begin their training when they're very young.

i would use this opp to adopt one.

your current dog would do wonders helping a kennel dog adjust.

First gen labradoodle is by far the best dog I"ve ever owned,, smart athletic, great hunter..

Vizsla, or German SHP, then they could be crazy together :)

lab rescue. My lab plays with the big ridgebacks at two dog parks.

Take a look at Australian Cattle dogs. They're smaller than your rhodesian but if you want a dog that you can trust off leash while running or MTBing they're tuff to beat. Negatives they're too smart. that and some masters get creeped out due to the dogs tend to STARE at their masters waiting for orders! My wife can't go any where with out Cole our ACD following! If she goes to the restroom he waits outside the door for her.

They can be a little barky. I can tell what is going on due to Coles bark. He has a great bark for my extended family. another for my sons, a bark for some close friends of ours the mailman/ups bark, a bark for other dogs being walked by, a bark for HEY JIM!!!! this racoon doesn't belong in MY back yard. Joanna has MS and falls. He will run over to her and stand guard over her letting us know she's down! ACD's are not a beginers dog they will test you. My last two adoptions were boxer mixed. Great dogs.

We have a beagle and he is the best dog I've ever had. He took some time to get structured but now I can walk him without a leash. Great with kids and other animals as well.

well i personally favor australian sheppards smart athletic, far mellower than border collies, great biking and running companions, and chicks dig em' lol

The shelters are full of pure breds. You can find whatever you want.

Everybody thinks their breed is the best. So I vote cattle dog as well. My experience is that it's more than just exercise. They want to be with their human. If you have a job where they can come with you it would be ideal.

When cowboy smiles he looks like a hyena/pig hybrid. Women find this adorable.

This is a Boxer/American Bulldog mix, we think. Affectionate, smart, playful. My buddy. Somebody did not want him. I am lucky to have him. His name is Scooby Do.

Well, I guess if a guy can't find a wife like that, a dog will have to do.

I like retrievers. I had several Labs (which meet the "short hair" requirement), and since then, two Golden Retrievers. I like the temperament of the Goldens better. I have the shorter haired hunting lines, so they are not as bad as the show dogs as far as their hair goes, but they doo have more than Labs. It's worth it to me, though.
