Considering getting another dog. What kind?
Wolverine needs a playmate. He is a 7 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback with a LOT of energy! He is my biking and hiking companion several times a week but he needs more. We live on 20 wooded acres so there is plenty of room for him to run, but he needs something to run with besides me!
Another Ridgeback is on top of the list, but I want to consider other (smaller) breeds. Initial criteria are: short hair, no barking, smart, obedient, loyal and medium sized. All these are Ridgeback characteristics except the size!! We will probably end up with another Ridgeback, but just wanted to get opinions on what else is out there. All suggestions appreciated! |
A "standard" Schnauzer would fit the bill. Great dogs, loyal and smart but you need to begin their training when they're very young.
|
i would use this opp to adopt one.
your current dog would do wonders helping a kennel dog adjust. |

check out the rescues and pounds in your area. |
First gen labradoodle is by far the best dog I"ve ever owned,, smart athletic, great hunter..
|
Vizsla, or German SHP, then they could be crazy together :)

lab rescue. My lab plays with the big ridgebacks at two dog parks.

Take a look at Australian Cattle dogs. They're smaller than your rhodesian but if you want a dog that you can trust off leash while running or MTBing they're tuff to beat. Negatives they're too smart. that and some masters get creeped out due to the dogs tend to STARE at their masters waiting for orders! My wife can't go any where with out Cole our ACD following! If she goes to the restroom he waits outside the door for her.
They can be a little barky. I can tell what is going on due to Coles bark. He has a great bark for my extended family. another for my sons, a bark for some close friends of ours the mailman/ups bark, a bark for other dogs being walked by, a bark for HEY JIM!!!! this racoon doesn't belong in MY back yard. Joanna has MS and falls. He will run over to her and stand guard over her letting us know she's down! ACD's are not a beginers dog they will test you. I've raised Huskys and Sheltys and Cole has been a handfull but for being a dog he's a great dog.Australian Cattle Dog - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |
Don't call them "rescues" if you get them a pound, please.
My last two adoptions were boxer mixed. Great dogs. |
We have a beagle and he is the best dog I've ever had. He took some time to get structured but now I can walk him without a leash. Great with kids and other animals as well.
|
well i personally favor australian sheppards smart athletic, far mellower than border collies, great biking and running companions, and chicks dig em' lol

The shelters are full of pure breds. You can find whatever you want.
Everybody thinks their breed is the best. So I vote cattle dog as well. My experience is that it's more than just exercise. They want to be with their human. If you have a job where they can come with you it would be ideal. |

This is a Boxer/American Bulldog mix, we think. Affectionate, smart, playful. My buddy. Somebody did not want him. I am lucky to have him. His name is Scooby Do.

Bodhi, one of my ACDs.
The one one the right is the best though. He don't bark, eat much, or dig up the yard.:D http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1349375281.jpg |

I like retrievers. I had several Labs (which meet the "short hair" requirement), and since then, two Golden Retrievers. I like the temperament of the Goldens better. I have the shorter haired hunting lines, so they are not as bad as the show dogs as far as their hair goes, but they doo have more than Labs. It's worth it to me, though. |
my brother adopted a shepard mix. i have yet to even pet this dog. it is wary and very very scared. it has a 10 foot no-fly zone that i cannot approach.
having said that..his wired hair pointer is really teaching it the ropes..i bet i will be able to pet the dog this holiday.. hate to say it, but two dogs is really a good idea. i could use a second one..but no way. |
all our dogs have been rescues from the pound. Two pure breds, several mixes, and a couple hybrids. Never disappointed.

We have a Weimeraner. She was a rescue dog. Her best canine friend is Rhodesian Ridgeback. They play semi-rough (chasing, tackling, wrestling), but it's always play.
Our dog is 65 lbs. Short hair. Smart. Only barks at intruders (but stops with a squirt bottle). Super loyal (to a fault). Obedient. She's a little neurotic/high strung, as is par for the breed. But she's mellowed out a lot since we've had her. |
We have two Wiener dogs, 7 & 3 and my old German Shorthair, 15. All are great dogs.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1349390879.jpg

Get one from a shelter - they're the best!
Or there are many in foster homes who are available. Do not buy from a breeder...they are only in it for the money...basterds! Ridgebacks are a wonderful breed and great companions. Best thing I ever did was get a second dog. I highly recommended it! http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...788_6418_n.jpg http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto..._1747762_n.jpg http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...788_4475_n.jpg |
Second the Weimeraner. Great dogs.
The wife went for a standard poodle - meets most of your requirements but for the coat/maintenance. He's 65# of muscle, brain and hair. A money pit if you paid someone else to groom him... A very contrarian choice these days and always gets attention, good and not so good. Weimeraner. Big, but not too big. Athletic, but not neurotic. Smart. Short coat. Win! |

Rescue. Rescue.Rescue. Do you have the need to be a hero? Then go fight a fire or rescue someone. Go be a hero. Adopting a dog or cat from a shelter does not make you a hero. You are not rescuing anything. You cannot possibly be the center of the universe because there is no such thing. STOP! If you do as before mentioned you are a good person. You have saved an animal from possible other consequences. But if this causes you the need to refer to yourself as someone who has "rescued" an animal please go pat yourself on the back somewhere else.

Easiest question all day....another Ridgeback, for sure! I had two of them, Mason and Moses, for 13 years. They are both gone now, and I miss them both everyday. They are a special breed. We have two new dogs now, who are just fine, but they are not Ridgebacks.
RIP Mason and Moses. JA |

You got 20 acres then you need a coupla Airedales as they are active dogs...smart, fearless, loyal, friendly, wants to be apart of the family and protective of the family. U really can not want a better dog than an Airedale. If I had the acreage that you do I would have 3 or 4 Dales, cause NOTHIN is comin on your property man nor beast. Dales are great hunters and watch dogs... Only thing is that they think they are smarter than you, and as such have a mind of their own |
Around here we can't leave our dogs run without supervision because they WOULD get into mischief. Running deer, exploring horse/ sheep pastures, etc., would all be on the "to do" list. We have six wooded acres for them to enjoy and outside those acres they are fine off lease if we're present. People around here have shot well loved family dogs for simply being in the same field as a flock of sheep. We have a Border Collie cross and a sort of terrier that we picked up while on a trip to the Baja. It's been my observation that the BC cross immediately was a nicer dog once we had the second one also, having a male and a female seems to make the "top dog" adjustment period much shorter. Cheers
