Brewster Buffalo Found

Interesting article in the Times on a Buffalo found off Midway:

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/02/us/02fighter.html?_r=0

And although it had a bad reputation, it did well with the Finns (earlier, lighter model?) and with this guy:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/17/world/asia/17fisken.html

I had an Airfix model of one when I was a kid. The wreck found in Finland is for sale, only $3 Million!

Glad I never had to do battle in one of those. As I recall she was a sitting duck against a Zero or ME-109. Just when you managed to get a good firing position the engine would overheat and spew oil all over the windshield. Sheesh!

pulled out of a russian lake a few years back.

before the war pappy boyington was part of the team evaluating the buffalo. he spoke well of it. but then the marine corp made a bunch of changes that added too much weight. ruined the plane.
the finns were sold early production models, and racked up VERY IMPRESSIVE kill ratios over the soviets.

Thanks for the links. This is an EXTREMELY rare warbird.

I recall reading that one of the major problems with this aircraft was overheating, and it did well with the Finns because of the environment, and because of the generally poor quality of the opposing pilots and aircraft at the time.

Pretty cool. I consider myself to be an airplane guy, and I had never heard of the Brewster Buffalo. In the grand scheme of airplane names, is there any worse name for a fighter than "buffalo"?

I fly a lot of WWII aircraft and I do not recall ever seeing or herd mention of one. I have seen 1 on the History Channel and in books. A rare find.

The Buffalo was a pre WWII design and was virtually obsolete by the time Japan bombed Pearl.

It was delegated to export and training squadrons. I recall that a squadron was at Midway and Wake Islands...they didn't last long.

Nicknamed the "Flying Coffin"....

^^^^ Spot on. They were pretty well known "in their day" but by the time the P-40, Spitfire, Zero and ME-109 came along, they were sitting ducks. Better than nothing but not much.

the problem was that the ME-109, ZERO, Spitfire and P-40 all predate the Buffalo.

the finns killed a staggering number of soviets. and flew the planes til they wore out. but it just never would have worked against first string opposition.

Oh, I don't know. Imagine climbing into the cockpit of your Ryan Fireball.
Or maybe taking on the enemy in your Boeing Peashooter. Hmmm.

Maybe you could blast into the skies in your Republic Thunderceptor!

They couldn't all be Sabres and Eagles!

Best

Close but not with the Zero really... Still the Buffalo was not anywhere near the class of the others on this list.

The Spitfires first flight was 5 March 1936

The ME-109's first flight was 29 May 1937

The Brewster Buffalo's first flight was 2 Dec 1937

The Zero's first flight was 1 April 1939.

I would love to find a P-26A Peashooter. There is a replica if I recall of one in Dayton. I am pretty sure no real ones exist.

Crappy as a fighter, but I would love to restore/fly/own one.
