U.S. Marathon record broke today 2:04:38

Thought us slackers would be interested (er... maybe not) to know how the Chicago Marathon went today.

Little dude Tsegaye Kebede (Ethiopian... as usual) breaks the US record. 2:04:38, wow!

Perfect chilly conditions.

Geez, I didn't realize that the world record is under 2:04! I bet good money someone will go under 2 hours in my lifetime. That is stunning times. Geesh, I get cramps just thinking about it.

Run at that pace for 500 yards, then imagine what it would be like to maintain that pace for , what?, 26 miles!

And likely in Chicago - one reason the marathon here is so popular is it's flat, and so a fast course (the other biggie - you don't have to qualify for ours, like you do some of the other big marathons).

I am surprised they have not had a faster time at the Marathon they run in Sacramento, flat, slightly downhill course, usually pretty cool when they run it. 2:10 is fastest for the CIM, 2:04 is flying.

Yeah, they keep this up and they will need titanium shoes due to the heat.

I'll be happy to get a half marathon done in that time - lol!

You think the high elevation of their country has something to do with the Ethopians cleaning up? (Genetic)?

Genetics and where they train is a lot of it. The Kenyans are known for distance running. I seem to remember reading that a lot of the US track athletes trained up at Tahoe for the 1960 Olympics

If I were to drive 26.2 miles, at the very least I'd have to get out and pee.

Somewhat. Runners from Kenya and Ethiopia train in thinner air, so running over here they simply don't get winded. They also grow up running. A Kenyan woman has the fast time in Chicago a while back, and in her interview said that as a child her school was 10 miles a way on foot. Since she was often late, she ran. If she forgot something at home, she'd run back, get it, return to school. Then it's 10 miles home. So she grew up logging 20+ miles/day, carrying books and her lunch, fully clothed. Marathoning's a breeze after that.

Okay, that Husky pictured above made me laugh more than I have laughed in a while!

A marathon-running friend is getting that emailed today!

I see cars with the "26.2" sticker on the back. I recently saw one "13.1", obviously someone who ran a half marathon. Got me thinking- I need a sticker that says "1.31". That's enough for me.

Good job to Ritz 3rd fastest American ever. Look at their pace per mile. That is the thing that is hard to comprehend.

To me the guys that put the 26.2, 13.1 stickers are like the old baby on board stickers. Lame who cares?

So at the end the 2nd place guy is 14 seconds back. A fair distance at that speed. I have watched these guys RACE near the end around the 1 or 2 mile to go marker. It's like who can endure the most pain in a flat out sprint wins.

I was next to a girl in a Jetta at a light, she had a 104.8 sticker. I rolled down my window and said "Seriously?" It was for a triathlon, turned out.
