Good chance I'm moving to Vermont

Probably move in January. I grew up in Massachusetts.
Job is in Montpelier. Wife likes that place, Stowe, Calais, Warren and some other places. Thoughts? Any Porsche advice? Like good mechanics, fun rides, etc... (saw the NY VT run in couple weeks ago)

thanks!

Pack your mittens.
Montpelier is a nice little city.
Not a lot to do in the winter unless you're a skier or own a snowmobile.
"Any Porsche advice?" Get a place with a heated garage.
I do all my own work but there are a few P-car specific shops around.

A place with a garage is mandatory, wife knows to not even look at a place without one. How important is the heated part? It actually seems like most places don't even have a garage at all. How common is it for them to be heated? Should I stick a space heater out there?
I like to do as much as I can on my own car, but I'm a novice. Looking forward to having a garage so I can do more myself.

My wife and I looked at moving up there to Montpelier a few years ago. We went up for a week in May to check things out. Things I discovered:

1. What Pete says: not much to do in the winter. You are from Mass, so know what the cold is like.

2. Very, very hard to find a house around Montpelier. State and local ordinances regarding lot sizes really discourage new housing. And what does come up for sale, goes very quickly. Prices are high (at least to me) for what you get. If you find a house you like, jump on it.

3. May be hard for the spouse to find a job in her chosen field right away.

I lived in VT for 10 years (including 4 years at UVM). VT winters are looooonnngg. Often VT is the coldest place in the USA (seems like North Dakota and Minnesota are the only colder places). For me, the summer driving (motorcycling) season was enough reason for me to endure the winters.

Lots of great roads, generally very little speed enforcement (at least back in the 90's), and you can legally pass on the double yellow

Our standard Sunday motorcycle loop was through Huntington, Rt. 17 over the Appalachian Gap to Rt. 100 So. through Granville Gulf, to Rt 125 West through Ripton, past Middlebury Snow Bowl, then back North up Rt. 116. We usually stopped for lunch at the Warren Store in Warren, Vt. Good times!

IMO one thing about living in VT: it is a life choice, not a career move. Cost of living up there is not particularly cheap, and the pay scale tends to be on the lower end of the meter (the "quality of life" penalty).

I believe once upon a time, Montpelier was the only state capital in the country that didn't have a McDonalds. Not sure if that still holds true.

Thanks

I life in socal right now and I hardly ever leave the house. I like being indoors I guess.
Compared to where I am now, I'm sure real estate will be cheaper. I'd prefer a nice long commute in the porsche and have acres away from the city.
My wife is a sahm, she can do that anywhere!

Yep, I'll have to check it out! Would I have more fun with the family there or going lone wolf?

Thats a really good loop... if you get brave you can head over Lincoln Gap..... the road get a lil rough but some of the views are spectacular...

So many good driving roads in Vermont

Another good dining option on the route is americanflatbreads in Waitsfield

All the best to you! If you're down by the Boston area at all drop me a line - it'd be fun to meet up with another Pelicanite!

Ok, got the offer today. Will be moving beginning of January. They'll ship 2 cars as part of the relo package. Got a sweet promotion and raise out of it, too!

Not yet. Wife wants Burlington but then is trying to budget my Porsche commuting in the nicer months #%!#$! So Maybe closer to Montpelier, but then taxes are high there. I'd like some more rural stuff like Calais where I can get some land, privacy and natural resources.
I was there last week. Cold and snowy, but very beautiful.
I'm gonna miss driving my car all year round, but I'm planning on using winter months to learn how to fix it.
