This has been around for a few weeks. He is now suing the dealership. I think the dealship needs to have regular legal action for a false police report.

Still, the person at the dealship that called the police should be under criminal prosecution for filing a false police report. He didn't steal the car!

Hey! Maybe their new slogan should be:

Priority Chevy! Where Our deals are such steals, we'll call the police!

Bingo! This could get interesting and very costly for the dealership...

Is it still theft when you get a receipt?

I had a similar experience very recently. I was negotiating a price on a new car and was dealing with the usual "let me run this by my manager" nonsense. I ultimately couldn't make a deal as we were $3000 apart on price, so I left.

When I got home, I went to the dealership's website and there it was--the very car I had been dealing on, listed right there in black and white, for nearly $4k less than the lowest price they had given me in person.

I couldn't believe my eyes but there it was. I printed out the information to make sure the stock numbers, etc. matched, and then called the dealership to speak with the salesman I had dealt with previously.

He had the sales manager for the dealership call me back (the next day, of course) and his tone was very condescending. He said "well, I guess I have to honor that price" and something to the effect of "the marketing company that handles our website obviously made a mistake here" but still agreed to honor the listing.

The snafu was in the add-ons that the dealership had put on the car--tinted windows, upgraded wheels and tires, lowered suspension and striping. They had never added the cost of these parts to the original sticker.

I went the next day to purchase the car--and the sales manager wouldn't even come out to speak to me.

Finally one deal went my way!

My last two new purchases have gone very well. Both were leftovers after the model year had changed. My truck arrived at the dealership 15-16 months before I purchased it! I ended up with 25% off list.

In the fall of '86, my wife was negotiating the purchase of an MR2. The old fellow who owned the dealership may have been a bit rattled by my wife (she has done that to me for 36 years) and when he pushed the purchase agreement across the table for her to look at, she noted he had made the final figure $1,400, NOT $14,000.

She later said she couldn't take advantage of a nice old man like that.

I just thank God she feels the same way about me these days.

Best

Dennis Ellmer, president of Priority Chevrolet, says he owes Sawyer an apology on behalf of the dealership, and had intended to do right by the buyer by letting him have the vehicle at the agreed-upon price. But Sawyer's lawyer says it's a little too late for saying, 'sorry.' The briefly-incarcerated owner has filed two lawsuits against the dealer, accusing the business of malicious prosecution, slander, defamation and abuse of process. All told, the suits seek a total of $2.2 million in damages, plus attorney fees.

I sure hope thise dealer is not a client of my employer. They may not be in business for much longer. At the very least, the salesperson will be out of a job.

I read it was a little more complicated. The guy bought a car for $34 then traded it the next day for a loaded version of the same car at near $40K . The accounting dept didn,t get the extra when he left with the car (easy to do if you scan the paperwork and you are still buying a 2012 same car (who checks vin numbers on every invoice) and someone started to call him about it.
The buyer was apparently away and returned to find a pile of messages from the dealer asking him to call.
Here,s where the dealer went off the tracks. They assumed he was ignoring their calls. They then called the police and reported the car stolen. I agree with the comment earlier about abuse of process. If the police arrived at my house I have the title to my cars. If the dealer didn,t get paid in full. They can prove it in a small claims case and perhaps send a registered demand letter etc.
I just bought a new truck 6 weeks ago I initially was charged $10 to transfer my old plates to it. Before it arrived I called and left a message to put new plates on it (A $65 difference) . They forgot to collect the $65 when I picked it up. I hope they don,t call the police (or perhaps I do for 2.2 mil.

The dealersihp acted like an idiot but no way is the buyer's inconvience worth $2.2 million.

The buyer should be due some compensation, but if I were a judge, I'd throw it out as being an absolutely frivolous amount. Get real.

Put me in jail illegally and the $$$ meter start's rolling.

Agree that what the dealership did at first was not worth it, but when they called the police and the cops put the guy in jail, sorry but its going to get expensive.

Agree. Expensive. But even half of that, 1.1 million, is excessive.

I'd be happy to spend a few hours in the pokey for a tenth of that- $220,000.

Sure but people on parf were outraged when ucla student protesters got $30,000 after being pepper sprayed. $30k might or might not be excessive for being arrested in this case perhaps he will get his new car free in the end Certainly not 2.2m
