Tundra 2017-2020 Which is best?
For a buddies son.
He wants a used Tundra in the year range 2017-2020 maybe 2021. Will be living in Scottsdale or nearby. What are the stay-away-from or desirable choices? Here are some option subjects: - 4.6 vs 5.7 - 2WD vs AWD - transmission versions? Was there a change in there? - I think all these are direct injection - same for variable valve timing - better or few cam tower leaks by year, same question for timing cover I'm pushing for white or a light color and 2WD and no vehicles from the rust belt and look for oil change documentation and other services as listed in the manual. No Flex fuel but I don't know if they had that. I've explained about the horrible gas mileage. Thanks.

Forget the Tundra and go for a Tacoma.

Not sure about the years you list but my 2011 Tundra limited 4x4 with 5.7 has been awesome. About 120k on the clock and no issues. I love it and plan to keep it a long time. Poor gas mileage at about 14-15 mpg when just commuting. I don't daily drive it rather I only use it when I need haul or tow something (race car, boat, motorcycles etc). Used it twice in the past to tow a 32' 8500 lb camper 300 miles to Oshkosh.... Plenty of power to spare even on hills doing 70+ mph.

I have a 2015 Tundra 5.7 with 134k. I tow a lot with it and it has been flawless.
If I baby it, I get 17mpg when I take it to Yorktown...no interstates and the cruise set at 62mph. Around town is 15mpg at best. This will be my last 1/2 ton truck. I am also a fan of the Tacoma - I have had several of the smaller trucks and they were also superb.

I tried talking them into a Tacoma. So far he doesn't want that model. He is a big guy so maybe that's why.

Why get a Tacoma when you can have a man size truck in the Tundra?
Same gas mileage. Way more power and room. Pretty much the same price. Get the 5.7.

I love my 2017 double cab with the 5.7 V-8, and 4 wheel drive. 56k and not a single problem. Tows a dump bed gravel trailer at 10,000 pounds without issue.
The only thing - a squirrel chewed a hole in a vent line from the gas tank. Set off the "check engine" light. They rubber line was part of the gas tank (so they told me). Cost $1900 to repair a hole in a vent line. Exactly. I was at the dealer getting my gas tank replaced. There was a Taco and an Tundra in the show room. The prices were shockingly similar. I asked the salesman why anyone would ever buy a Tacoma. He shook his head, said he sure as hell wouldn't.

Yeah the Taco doesn't have a lot of head room.
