Yes! with chocolate nut cake (or maple...) some of the best from the early 90s.

Never served, but did a lot of camping, etc. where MREs were handy, useful, and not that bad compared to alternatives.

I hope to never eat another MRE. I had to eat way too many of them during my career.

I too ended up with a handfull of P38's. I still had one left a few years ago but haven't seen it for a while.
I think the cigs were a "4 pack". Guys that smoked would trade for them.
How 'bout the lima beans with ham? ughhh.. some stuff was nasty.

I have never had the new MRE's. No need.

Some "rats" came with sterno.

We had C-rats whan I was in and they weren't too bad. Whan Katrina hit the Army came by and dumped off a bunch of MRE's at a dump site I was working. There was no food around or electricity so we ate them 3 times a day. You could heat them up on the dozer with the little heater in them and not have too bad a meal. When I found out how many calories were in them I quit eating them. Obviously for young soldiers, not old equipment operators. I don't remember applesauce being in them.

When I went to Ranger school (1 MRE a day in those days) you were able to tell what your buddy ate by the smell of his farts; Beef diced with gravy had a very distinct smell; but they all caused a different smell. Back then we used to get rotten MREs quite often, I felt like crying when my only MRE was rotten. Now days we don't eat them too often, and I usually just dig out the candy or what ever is good and throw the rest away. They are a lot better than when I first came in.

Jalepeno cheese... The best addition to the MRE line-up every. Several years ago I was in the field for 2 weeks and the guys in my platoon gathered up all the beef stew MREs and replaced my MREs with them. I still can't eat a beef stew MRE to this day....

Back in the Civil Air Patrol we were on this operation pretending to be terrorist attack victims for the NG and we all ate MRE's beforehand and my knucklehead friend decided to keep the unused little heater thing. To make a long story short he put it in his pocket and got burned while in a blackhawk on his way to a hospital to pretend to be a burn victim.
