I do volunteer construction work for eldery/disabled/single parent/poor through the local office of Rebuilding Together.

Just a couple organizations get any money. To those few, we've been pretty generous, as we have personal knowledge of their leadership, and know the money is used very wisely.
We have never given a dime because of a solicitation by mail or phone.

Saint Basil Academy, NY. It is an orphanage. I donate in an honor of my dad.

Every year I give thousands of dollars to the single largest social handout organization in America.

Great, under appreciated organization. My Mother ran the ASPCA in Aiken, South Carolina for many years, all on her own time. She had a really profound impact well in excess of her simply writing a check.

No issues with donating, BTW.

I give food and money to the local Food Bank and Senior center.
This country is too great to have hungry people.

ACLU, Nature Conservancy, Humane Society, kids' schools (currently a high school and a middle school). Edit; forgot, Goodwill too.

Was a trustee for the kids' previous school for last three years. Probably 300 hours/year of work. Wife was spending similar amount of time running events for that school. She is doing some, but less, stuff for the kids' current schools. I'm not doing any volunteer work this year.

May I assume it goes by the initials of: IRS ?

ASPCA, USO, fap, and we send one of those Xmas packages to a soldier.

United Way. They do a lot to support our community

American Diabetes Assn, couple scholarship funds. I donate goods and services to a couple schools and churches for their fundraiser deals. Give stuff and dough to the Childrens Receiving Home.

I donated hair to Locks of Love one time, but would rather not do that again. Having really long hair is like having a second job and sucked more than somewhat

This too.

Work in some free clinics, do diabetes education things for a few different groups. My wife says I need to learn to say no, screw that.

Have had more than one smart old codger tell me the same thing. When you get old, you don't regret the things you did, you regret the things you did not do.

I wish I could give this year has been a BAD year for me.

I kinda give by not taking anything from the MS Society. Joanna's MS is really getting bad.

red-beard 10-29-2012 05:37 AM

MS Society, Red Cross, WWP, NRA, Boy Scouts, Catholic Church, Episcopal church.

I also volunteer with the MS Scociety.

I will never support the United Way, after the very public national scandals.

GH85Carrera 10-29-2012 05:53 AM

Salvation Army is the main one. They don't spend millions on administration overhaed like so many charities.

Also a local charity, Sunbeam Family services.

Lothar 10-29-2012 06:04 AM

Church, MS Society, Wounded Warrior, American Cancer Society, LiveStrong, Hospice of Wake County, GoodWill.

This.

But, United Way will never ever ever never get a penny of my money. What a total scam.
It's all about the money with them, I'm been through one of their time-share training programs designed to teach companies how to effectively fleece their employees.
If the company reached the goals, the bosses get personally rewarded.
I wonder if united way still has that $10 million yacht in the Caribbean or the $4 million penthouse overlooking central park, with or without the optional hookers?

My favorite part was how they promise you that if you designtate a certain charity, united way will give your contribution to that charity.
Good luck with that

I've given a modest amount to many groups over the years. I like to give back, even a little, but cant stand the constant mailing and phone calls. I'm thinking about giving more to fewer groups and hopefully figuring out how to limit the BS mailings and phone calls.

madmmac 10-29-2012 07:49 AM

Red Cross, Salvation Army, Church, Ashley House, Camp Prime Time, Plateau Outreach Ministries, Disaster Relief Funds, Local Food Bank.
