Amazing! Presumeably the whole plane would cartwheel if the landing gear went in a few inches too deep.

Yep, those badass South African Air Force pilots. I owned an ex-SAAF T6 and met a few of them. They prepped a lot for that shoot and went out when it was glass smooth. You can actually push forward on the stick to hold it on the water without risk of disaster.

Big key is to stand on the brakes. Tires must be locked in order to ski on the surface. If the tires begin to rotate, things will get wet in a hurry.
