Tobra 11-01-2012 09:44 PM

Tobramycin is a fairly nasty antibiotic that is liable to make you deaf, commonly called, Tobra.

I got the Tobra monicker in Podiatry school. Was at an Oakland A's game, in the nosebleed seats. I yelled at the plate umpire loud enough that he turned around to look. One of my Canadian friends, Chewie, so named because he was the size of a Chewbacca, was sitting beside me. He turned to me and said, "GD, you are going to make me deaf." The nickname ensued a few beers later.

tevake 11-01-2012 09:58 PM

Tevake was the name of the last traditional master navigator from the Solomon Islands. He collaborated with sailor/author David Lewis teaching him traditional navigation. The resultant book " We The Navigators" inspired the building of the voyaging canoe Hokulea, who's voyages started the Polynesian cultural revival that has blossomed all across the Pacific.

Our sailboat Tevake took us all over the south pacific cruising there for a couple years. Cruising folks are often refered to by their boat's name in conversation and on the radio too.
So it just seemed natural.

Cheers Richard

I spent a few years in San Luis Obispo. I'm not slow. ;)

LeeH 11-01-2012 10:16 PM

I'm thinking I had a different name on Pelican when I first signed up - something related to the '84 Targa I had at the time. Once I sold the car and bought another, it occured to me that as frequently as I changed cars, I should have a name on Pelican that was a bit more constant... like my own name. "Lee" was probably taken so I added the H from my last name, Hines.

I like Porsches. :)

iplagolf 11-02-2012 03:44 AM

Back in the very early days of AOL I wanted Iplaygolf but it was taken. Shortened it to Iplagolf. It's what I used to do every day. If you ever have the thought of taking up the game, lay down until the feeling goes away, you'll be doing yourself a favor!!!

Geronimo '74 11-02-2012 03:58 AM

Nickname my parents gave me when I was young, followed by the year my first Porsche was built. ( a 2.7)

Geronimo was taken when I signed up in 2003.
Never came across that user and I can't seem to find him now.
Have thought about asking the mods to change it if available but never really bothered.

Mine was my nickname when I lived in Nairobi.

It means "endowed like Obama" in Kenyan.

Mine is simply "Goud" spelled backwards.

The Goud are an Indian caste. They reside mostly in the central Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Orissa and Maharastra. According to the Goud Puran, members of the Goud come from Varanasi and other parts of Northern India. They were originally engaged in the manufacture and sale of spirits and liquors.[1] They also may have been Ayurveda doctors and farmers. The Goud community originally thrived near the Godavari River whose trade of living on palm tree products. This included toddy tapped from coconut and other palm trees.[2]

The other is...

'72 for the best Porsche 911 year and 2,2 for the German moniker for 2.2 and S is the original engine. One if not the best early engines.

GWN7 11-02-2012 04:32 AM

I'm a Bob and Doug McKenzie fan. It stands for Great White North. When I tried to enter GWN as my nick on IRC GWN was taken, so I added a 7...hence GWN7 :)

Happened to be snacking on a chocolate bar while registering for Pelican.

tweezers74 11-02-2012 04:58 AM

When I was in junior high and on the tennis team, my coach started adding "ers" to everybody's name, either their first or last name to come up with their nickname. Mine just happened to come out tweezers which everybody thought was hilarious. Some of the girls also played with me on the golf team so I had friends calling Tweezers all the time, off the courts and course and it stuck. 74? My birth year. :)
