Bending aluminum angle edging
I'm in need of opinions on bending angled edging around a curve.....heat, clip a "V"...or what?

Like edging for a soffit? Can you just bend it and nail it as you go?

Fluting pliers, cut out v's, our a shrinker tool (if you had one). I have used all methods in experimental aircraft construction "thin aluminum".

I built a tear drop trailer. I'm fabricating the edging to cover the seams between the vertical walls and the roof. I'll be using s/s self tapping screws.

![]() Use a shrinker/stretcher, like Eastwood sells. https://www.google.com/search?q=eastwood+metal+shrinker/stretcher&hl=en&client=firefox-a&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=5f2WUMuSBpDC0AG73ICwDw&ved=0CE8QsAQ&biw=1275&bih=731 Last edited by DanielDudley; 11-04-2012 at 02:46 PM.. |

I have a shrinker/stretcher..... It works great, but it does leave tiny serrations everywhere it is used. They can be sanded out, but it takes lots of work.
Pretty sure Harbor Freight sells the same thing for a much lower price. I think you could get by with fluting pliers assuming the bends are fairly large radius. If you do it uniformly, the remaining flutes might not look too bad. You can make a set by welding some round pins to an old set of vise grips. You get the idea ![]() ![]()

A softer temper will help. 6063 T-4 is good. It will temper up harder with time. T-5 and T-6 don't bend as well. T-5 is better than T-6 if that is all you can get.
Good luck. Larry |

Aluminum alloy 5052-H32 is commonly used in the electronics industry for enclosures, brackets and any parts that require bending. It's quite common and should be available from any metal supplier.

Tim, those rods aren't welded parallel to each other - right? It looks like the two bottom rods are angled away from center in the close up picture of the modified pliers.

This is quite an interesting thread as right now I trying to make stepsills for my '29 chevy. There is a curve involved and a sheet metal bender has assured me he can do it . Says he has a bender that make a pizza pan if needed. (Not needed)
It's not an english wheel, I don't think, but I need to see it (or get one). Somebody and something has to make those pizza pans. Round pizza pans that is. |

Joe Bob is your trailer made with Plywood? If So why dont you consider glassing the corners? Installing the metal will create water traps underneigth and then there are the fastener wholes to let the water into the ply.
There was an era when boats got ply decks, then teak was glued and screwed down, This turned out not to be such a good plan. Hate to see you drill a bunch of wholes in its now sealed skin. Cheers Richard |
