				NYC Marathon

Should the show go on, or should it be postponed?

Postponed. This disaster isn't like 9/11 where you wanted things to go on to show that New Yorkers couldn't be defeated. You've got the lower half of New York City and much of the NJ coastline devastated. They already think that the upper half of NYC doesn't care about them and this is just another indication.

As posted in the donation thread. The mayor is trying to show that things are normal. He's an ass. We need all the support and help possible, now!

I think they should take the volunteers, the runners, the generators, the police, the water, the food, etc and help/give it to the people of NY!

I am on board with this ^^^^. I can't fathom why they would have this event now. What a tool Bloomberg is, and a harbor freight tool at that.

I ran that marathon in 2000 and it's a massive operation, one I can't imagine going well under the current conditions. There are so many police and other first responders involved in the whole thing and they really have more important things to do now.

Bloomberg is a heartless money guy. The End. . Isn't he the mayor who canceled the elections and gave himself another term?...by proclamation?

I can't see how there would be ANY question or hesitation.

Makes sence it's canceled. Saw Bloomberg on the news the other day saying he was worried how the runners would be able to get into town with all the disruptions to the transit systems......I thought they could run into town if they wanted to race.....

Unless they've changed the route since I ran it, the race starts at Ft. Wadsworth, which is just on the Staten Island end of the Verazzano Bridge. That's not an easy place to get to without mass transit. My folks drove me there from NJ, which means over the Outerbridge. But since you immediately run across the Verazzano into Brooklyn, anyone who wants to watch along the route needs to get there. No spectators can stand on the Verazzano during the race. I was packed in like a sardine and couldn't run as fast as I wanted to for the first 10 miles. I can't see how this race would be logistically possible under the current conditions.

Well that's good news. AND there are 10,000 extra people who are all fit and well, and available to sweep and shovel.

Morons! It was only canceled after the large public outcry. Not because the race officials or the mayor suddenly came to their senses! It is a big and an important event and what not, but it is like you are having a big event at work or a wedding to go to, if you are sick, you have to face the music and call it off ... What really sucks is that the runners will already have gotten on their respective planes and possibly into the city by now. They sure could have been told earlier (it was pretty clear on Tues/Wed that this was a no-go). I have a guy in my running group that was scheduled to go and really torn if he should go or canel. I will be curious to hear next week if he finally decided to go and was turned around after his arrival today. G | ||

And not to mention the diversion of attention as well as the diversion of limited resources.

+1, a really lousy thing to do to the people who have flown in from around the world. Why couldn't they have reached this conclusion earlier?
