Oh, and as far as "overpenetration", we discussed that at length on this forum just recently. It is pure and utter b.s. No such thing.

as much as i HATE TO ADMIT IT, BIGGER IS BETTER.................cheese and rice i KNOW MY NEIGHBORS WILL BE REALLY PISSED if i light off 30rds out of my SOCOM .308 with mall ninja insight technology light on it at a bad guy inside my house.

ESPECIALLY IF IT HITS THEM!

i LOVE THE "OVERWHELMING SUPERIOR IN-FREEKING-SANE FIREPOWER AND MUZZLE FLASH ALONG WITH DEAFENING NOISE" aspect...............but even living on acreage vs cookie cutter homes in a subdivision..............ITS A TEENSIE WEENSIE MUCH for my "litigious" brain.

my house is standard drywall/studs/insulation/T-111 siding/with schicken wire and maybe a 1/2" of mud(stucco) on it. i think i would be safe to venture my measly m-1 carbine let alone my 30/30's would go right thru one side and out the other no problemos.

yes there may be obstructions here and there but if i came out my bedroom, the hallway leads right straight thru to my front door..................and thats where my rounds would be going.

and thats what has me AFEARED of COLLATERAL DAMAGE!(military lingo).

and a LAWSUIT that puts ME in da po house!

hmmmm maybe i should upgrade my wall decor with ARMOUR PLATING! i know wifey would love that. so much so , that i would come home and find a lil note stating "yer NUTZ SEE YA LATER!"

crap we have shot CLEAN thru abandoned car engine blocks(v-8's) with .357 pistoles!

The Box O' Truth - Ammo Penetration Testing

My son's bedroom is at a perfect angle from the front door of the man in my neighborhood that has the most to lose. He's also left 3 countries that didn't want him due to his religion. USSR, Iran & Ethiopoia.

I would love to know more of what he's seen when he's had a few glasses of wine in him and no one else is in the room.

This is what I meant to say but Jeff does it so much better... I keep the 870 in case 'home defense" ever has to go outdoors.

Also, if you hear a loud noise at your neighbors house, and you go to investigate only to find someone dropped a jar of pickles... everyone will be much less freaked out if you have a pistol hidden in your back pocket as opposed to showing up brandishing a shotgun.

Scott, you're in California. unless there's bullets coming in you send no rounds out.

Home defense has many scenarios. If my home is ever breeched (alarm going off and dog barking his rear off) then family converge to single room, lock door, point big gun at door with 911 on the phone. That sort of scenario plays very will with a 12 gauge SG - or a center fire carbine.

Rarely/ever would a 'tactical' home sweep be on my agenda. Steal my stuff - that's what my insurance is for. Ignore our warnings and breech the room door - that's what 00 buck is for.

Exactly.

I will be calling 911 and sitting at the end of a dark room waiting for them bad guys to enter. I will shoot to kill if they enter the room. It is not likely go looking for them.

I have a commercial copy M1 carbine that I would use for "home defense". I figure the .30 carbine would do a good job at the very close ranges but unless it went through a window it probably wouldn't exit my house (like maybe a .223 could).

Fantastic plan; this is actually what many "experts" recommend. Don't go looking for trouble. Have a "safe room" - not necessarily the master bedroom, but one that is centrally located, that everyone can get to quickly. Often, this is the smallest child's bedroom, or an elderly parent's, or anyone else who probably won't make it out of their own room into another "safe room" quickly. It helps if this room faces the street - that's where the cops come from. You want to be able to see them, maybe be able to holler out the window at them (wife and kids' voices help differentiate residents from bad guys). Stay on the cell phone with 911 through the whole ordeal.

That said, in the groggy wee hours, many families simply won't be able to pull this off in an emergency. There is simply too much "WTF??!!" involved when awoken in the middle of the night. Everyone is confused, in denial ("this can't be happening"), and may very well be too slow in getting to the "safe room". Or, if the bad guy(s) are already on their way down the hall, we certainly don't want unarmed family members intermingling with them.

That, and how many families actually drill on this? Or home egress in a fire, for that matter. Seems kind of silly, but if this is your prefered plan, what makes anyone think all will go well unless it is practiced to the point of automatic reaction?

So, in the end, the handgun is still the prefered in-home defensive weapon. It will work quite well to cover the door in the "safe room", assuming everyone made it. It will also serve to step out into the hall and go after the guy who is now dragging your daughter down the hall by her hair, after she couldn't make it to the "safe room". It can be readily deployed while in bed, should the intruder make it past all of your "early warning" devices. It's just a more versatile choice. Not as "bad ass", but certainly a whole lot more usefull than any long gun.

Yes, I'm not a "tactical" guy and would never go on the offense... matter of fact in 55 years in Cali never fired a shot in anger and doubt I ever will.

However we do live in earthquake country and in the event of total breakdown I am prepared.

I don't disagree that indoors a carbine or shotgun isn't an optimal weapon. But he's got 2 handguns in very capable calibers, and is asking for other options. Really I was suggesting a pistol caliber carbine and some reloading equipment, but thought I'd broaden up a bit and include some hunting options as well. Plus, as you noted, not all home defense situations take place indoors, or against people.

scottmandue 11-07-2012 03:51 PM

I keep a case of dynamite next to the bed... anyone breaks in I just light up a stick and toss it in the living room...

That...

And the KATANA!!!!

Rapewta 11-07-2012 04:40 PM

A Stoner 63A with a couple 110 round plastic ammo boxes would work.

So will a good dog, 38 revolver and cell phone.

fred cook 11-07-2012 05:00 PM

Best combo.........

160 lb dog and an 870 12 Ga pump!

HardDrive 11-07-2012 05:25 PM

.40 Sig 226 main gun.
.38 S&W J-frame backup.
.357 Ruger Blackhawk with 158 gr JHP if I get really pissed off:D

I don't keep my long guns readily accessible.

ckelly78z 11-07-2012 07:49 PM

I can't believe that no one has mentioned or owns a Taurus "Judge" .45/410 revolver pistol that as suspected, shoots either .410 shotgun shells, or .45 brass shells. You can actually alternate them in the revolver.

I don't own this gun, but have fired many rounds through my brother-in-laws .45/410 and can say with certainty, the spread pattern on a short barrel like that is impressive and deadly to anything standing remotely 30 feet in front of you. (don't have to aim) For outdoor work, nothing makes the sphinxter pucker up in a would be robber like the cocking sound of my Reminton 870 with 5 shots to get it right.

I also have a Springfield 45 ACP, a 9 MM , and a 22 mag pistol to choose from so don't even think about it.

i feel the opposite. every drug cartel guy that gets arrested in el paso, has pit bulls or some other big dog. no issues.

my brother said they would be in trouble if they all got tiny yappy dogs. nothing gets past a terrier with anger management issues. nothing. but dont tell anyone.

the 12 ga..i agree.

Using .410 in a pistol is illegal in some states.
