What is Your Ideal Home Defense Combo?

So Christmas is coming up, and I have a wife and father-in-law that are very conducive to buying me new toys that go bang for Christmas. The recent Sandy happenings as well as our post-SHTF planning threads have me thinking about how I should augment my current .45 and 9mm. I can't swing an arsenal like some of you, but a basic question:

what do you see as the most important home defense tool(s) and why?

Long gun, no question.

I would ask Santa for an AR.

Because a pump 12 ga is so cheap, just buy it yourself.

Do really expect to get into a gunfight or Zombie attack? I have no statistic but I bet 99.9999% of Bulgars will haul ass out the door as soon as they hear that shotgun racked.

Get an AR15 before the next ban.

Decent 1911 or glock in .45 or 10mm next

Last to be banned will be the shotguns

AR15 and a 12 gauge, what I expected thus far. Any particular recommendations? A quick look shows decent prices at Cabelas (local) for the Sig and S&W AR15 variants. For a 12 gauge, what would be ideal for both home defense and skeet? Remington 870 or a Benelli?

I have a Sig P250 subcompact 9mm and a Springfield 1911 .45, so I'll focus on the longer stuff for now.

870, the chevy smallblock of shotguns

AR15, buy one you can afford RIGHT now. you can add quality to it later. once you have a reciever you have what will be banned. parts can be swapped later.

Ammo, and a Dillon reloader.

WE REALLY NEED A STICKY for "Spons, what should I buy? And did they really make Rosie O'donnel fat?

Benelli, Remmington, Mossberg, etc... buy the one that feels the best to you. The 870 advantage is that there are so many outfitting options available and it's a low cost - high quality option to begin with. My 870 sports a 18.5" barrel with a 6+1 tube when at home. I purchased a used 28" rib barrel with choke for $60 and the gun works great for trap shooting. After more than 1.5K rounds of cheap Federal trap loads (7.5 shot) I started getting some failure to eject (FTE) which was cleared right up with a quick polish of the bore with some 00 steel wool. For HD use load up with 00 buck and call it a day. Slugs are tons of fun to shoot and are surprisingly accurate to 100 yards out of a smooth bore barrel.

This guy AIP Tactical knows a ton about the 870 platform and his site is worth reading. He also posts alot over on Calguns (member aippi). Our resident expert (OddJobUno) will steer you to VanComp who has a huge Military/LEO following. It all gets spendy quickly so you need to decide on what you need and how much you want to spend.

Personally I would keep the SG purchase under $500 and spring for a center fire carbine (AR, AK, Mini14/30, etc...) to round out the day.

My (current) favorite home/ranch defense AR15 is a lightweight polymer lower (Cavalry Arms, now defunct) with a 14.5" pencil barrel and a pinned 1.5" flash hider (bringing total length to a non-NFA 16"). It's a very lightweight, maneuverable spoon.

However its competition for "favorite" is a 16" .308 AR. There's something to be said for 3x heavier bullets (and 2x the muzzle energy).

I have more 30 rd. AR mags than I can ever use, most of which are still in the packaging. But my next AR will be a SIG 551 or 556. I don't think the lower receivers would be affected by any new ban. The cosmetic features in the last ban would be and those are mags, flash suppressors, folding stocks and other BS add-ons that have no effect on real firepower. I don't think another ban will happen, but everyone loves talking about them, as it's great business for the gun business. Buy all the ammo you can afford. You can never have too much and it can be prone to shortages.

No. 18" is the minimum shotgun barrel length. Otherwise it's a "short barreled shotgun" (SBS) subject to the NFA and a $200 tax stamp.

16" is the minimum rifle barrel length.

There are overall length restrictions as well; I don't remember those offhand because I don't have any bullpup platform rifles that might be subject to those.

Burglars, rapists, crooks, zombies beware. One of the 3 of these will get you.
