No doubt about that. I had a 21 lbs. Manchester Terrier that had the bark of a German Shepard. My two cattle dogs both have big barks but Colbi would do the same as Daisy, kiss, lick, lick, lick. Now Maxx is a different story. He would defend the house with his life.

For the one scare I had (two shady looking guys lurking at the front door exhibiting suspicious behavior) the gun I grabbed from the collection was my USGI M1 Carbine. One 15 round mag locked and loaded with two more in the stock pouch makes for plenty of fire power, although the need for a magazine change in a scenario such as this is probably slim to none.

My blue Heeler is a pretty good deterrent by himself, but no way I would put my dog face to face with an armed or dangerous intruder so he could get hurt or killed

that is one of the many reasons i own a dog: to run interference in dangerous situations. i'd sacrifice my dog in a second to gain the upper hand in the situation you described. IMO. YMMV. etc.

Well, I finally broke down and bought an AR15. Per Paul's recommendation earlier in this thread I bought a S&W MP15 Sport at Cabelas. I need to grab some pics but it's standard AR, Minus some of the typical AR stuff like the ejector dust cover and force forward button. Pretty decent looking Magpul sights, and it came with a Magpul magazine. Compared to a similarly priced Bushmaster the S&W felt significantly better made, the Bushmaster felt cheap and loose and had some ready ugly casting marks on it. I'll be shooting it tomorrow at my in-law's farm and I can't wait.

no dust cover? on an AR?
Can you fit one aftermarket?

the original M16 didn't have a dust cover or a forward assist. the forward assist was the indent in the bolt, which the MP15 does have. i looked hard at the MP15, but i went with palmetto. for $100 more, i got a full milspec weapon and an FN hammer forged barrel. (it was actually about $50 more, but i had to buy a rear sight, which was about $50.) i've read some great reviews about the MP15 sport and i saw a guy reviewing one on youtube where he kicks sand and crap in it, leaves it out in the rain for hours, zero problems.

i shot my rifles yesterday and had a blast. the ar15 is a lot of fun and you can get some projectiles down range in a hurry.

forward assist no, but pretty i've never before seen an AR-15 or M-16 without a dust cover

Even if i look now, can't find one, only that MP15 comes up.

I did quite a bit of research and never could find any real problem with the lack of forward assist or a dust cover. I'm not crawling around in the desert with it, so realistically I couldn't see it being an issue. Overall I only saw positive feedback on the MP15.

i'm not saying it's a problem, just seems odd to me for an AR

Actually, about two years ago I did crawl around the desert with a "slickside" AR (no dust cover, no fwd assist) for an entire weekend. Did not clean/lube/anything it the entire time, just loaded up mags and rang the gong at longer and longer distances. Zero issues. I expected to have some problems as at one point there was a COBB 50 next to me that was kicking up its own dust storm, seemingly right into my rifle's ejection port...but no issues other than a nose/mouthful of dust.

I just finished building a precision AR with a side charging handle. Because of the charging handle you can't have a dust cover, and the forward assist is superfluous. I don't expect any issues.

Hmm...I seem to like the word "issues". Corporate America is melting my brain....

One more vote for an 870, but I'd include a handgun for portability and rapid response.

Besides, I know I can't hit much with my 1911A1 beyond very close range, but it is one heck of a scary noisemaker.

If you live in a rural enough area, a South African Boerboel is probably the best homestead protection dog in existence.
