Sitting on cash. Where/when to invest

I am sitting on cash in my trading account. I am at a toss up at buying a multi family rental or trying to time the market with the tax increases, fiscal cliff coming. I have not interest in being a landlord.

My theory is that there will be a pretty sizable sell off between no and end of December. Does the PPOT crowd think there will be a market dip worth waiting to invest into?

Good luck making money based on market timing and predicting dips. I would suggest buy value and hold.

If you don't want to be a landlord why are you considering a multi-family rental?

What about investing more in your own home? Trading up?

I am looking for something that can kick off an income stream for us. The default for this is rental properties and dividend yields. (Oh and it used to be laddered CD's, but at .6% return, CD's are out). It's tough trying to find investments right now. My old stand by, Hookers and Blow, have an inverted yield curve at present.

And same problem here too. I really have no interest in real estate (my dad is a landlord) and I already do monthly automatic investments into 401k and mutual funds. I have too much cash that isn't doing anything. Interest rates suck.

You just can't predict what the current "O" regime has plans for that will affect the markets in which ways. I think if you could find a nice sherriff sale single family or duplex and clean it up with new paint, carpets, and kitchen counters appliances for being a rental, you will have a hedge against inflation, or the volitile markets.

Yea, back in 1978 I bought my 1st house I got a great deal at only 12.5% interest for my 30 year home loan. Now that I actualy have a little money the CDs are paying 1/2 %

It is enough to make me miss Jimmy Carter.

One thing for sure the government will keep interest rates as low as possible with the national debt as HUGE as it is.

Like everyone else I would love to find a safe 12.5% earnings.

....and of course, because our life savings is yielding a nice, safe 0.5% return, and the SS retirement age is going up, no one can afford to retire. This results in no new decent paying jobs for college grads to inherit and the unemployment rate continues to climb. . .leading to interest rate reductions to support the weakening housing market. Can you say....catch 22?

IF you want real estate without hassles

try to find a good REIT
I would guess a homes or small commercial would be better then the bigger stuff
but I think you need to look 5 to 10 years out
not a few months

For years & years I tried to invest on my own via mutual & index funds and only did well during the dot com frenzy - who didn't?
It became too stressful for me; I admitted that I really didn't fancy learning what I needed to know in order to do well in the market.
So I looked around for assistance.
I am with this fellow & his team, now...doing quite well at a ratio of 80% Wealth Preservation & 20% Growth. My fee to him is 1%.
All the $$$ remains in my C. Schwab accounts, but they buy/sell as they see fit.
I sleep much better, now.
BTW, he, himself, invests at a ratio of 20% Wealth Preservation & 80% Growth.

DeGreen Capital Management
.
A good local friend has been w/a fee-based advisor in LA, Ca, for yrs. and she's doing very well, too (14% growth so far this yr.).
Also, 1% fee.
.
Good Luck!

Just before the election, I happened to have sold off 100k of stocks that weren't working well for me, kept the proceeds in cash whilst deciding what to buy.

Market took a nosedive, great oppurnity to buy, 100k cash remained 100k, so today I bought equal shares of G.E., Verizon and Roche and am letting the rest of my portfolio ride for the moment.

I got out of investing in real estate years ago; too stressful for me.

Here little pot, pot, pot, pot.

Now, where'd he run off to.

Invest in whatever opportunity is paying the best return at the moment. If it is your mortgage, then check it out against other tax free investments and invest in you mortgage. Sometimes the best investments are not so obvious, but might be right under your nose.
