There has to be more to this story. I really don't understand why having an affair should be a reason to resign from a job, but maybe that is because I am French. Never been a problem for Francois Mitterand, or Bill Clinton for that matter. If one has an affair, the right thing to do might be to get divorced, not quit a job.

Financial issues are the biggest concern, but marital infidelity is another one. Petraeus actually is showing that he is a consummate, though flawed, professional. I know a CSM who served directly under him and he has nothing but respect for the man.

It was a huge problem for Clinton. He was impeached because he talked about it. i agree, he should have told the hounds chasing him "It's none of your business!" but if we have a system where this kind of behavior isn't condoned, then it can't be condoned by anyone.

They (at least POTUS) end up having de facto the highest clearance in the land. That doesn't mean that they necessarily have a high level of integrity. In fact one could argue that politics beats that out of people early on.
