Where have all the Hummers (H2) gone?
 

A few years ago during the real estate boom you couldn't go a mile on local suburban streets in California without seeing an H2. Now I see one once every month.

I am wondering how many of these were sold and why they are not on the suburban roads any more? I am literally wondering where all these cars went???

Funny I was wondering this the other day too. Not just the H2s but the Suburbans, Navigators, Escalades and other behemoths from the mid-2000s when boorish "conspicuous consumptionism" stupidity oozed from every street corner almost as readily as fake paper profits from bubble-based real estate transactions.

For one I'm glad those things are (mostly) off the road now. I said it then and I'll stand by it now. The world is a better place with those things heading to the scrapyards of the American hinterlands en masse. To each their own but I certainly won't/don't miss em!

Whoever thought that it was a good idea to put 6,000 and 7,000 pound, poor-handling, overpriced rebodied pickups into the hands of every no-driving-skills, cell-phone yammering, latte-sipping, text messaging, distracted Suzy Soccermom and/or arrogant "my-self-indulgent-ego-masturbation-is-more-important-than-your-family's-life" a-hole out there was tokin' the wacky weed they just legalized in CO and WA!

It looks like they only sold a total of 133k and that sales numbers track really well with the real estate bubble and the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Once the military Humvee became the target of never ending IED attacks, civilian popularity of the H2 probably weaned quickly as well.

Trendy only lasts so long. The H2/3 is/was hideous.

I still see them around here - along with many of the very large SUVs that PoP loves to bash. 10 mpg...ha that's what my wife averages in her Land Rover.

IDK, I still see a lot of them in my part of town. Maybe they're less common than in their 2006-2007 heyday. But they're nowhere near extinct.

I still see Hummers, Escalades, Suburbans and those monster Nissan whatever, Armada, things every day. Lots of them still around. I don't think gas prices bother the people that drive them. Gas prices bother lower income and poor people.

My brother still sells a lot of the above mentioned cars to his "special finance" customers. The "buy here, pay here" crowd.

I think you can pick them up super cheap. I bet they don't even get that poor of mileage as compared to other full size SUV's but the image of the dork's who bought them when they were new will forever tarnish their appearance.

They are all on the used car lots here in Kentucky. Us poor folks can't afford to fuel them.

I wondered the same thing up here. Everybody HELOC'd an H2 on 22" rims and had stickers for the multilevel marketing/real estate/mortgage broker business. Now they are absent. I assume many were lease returned or repo'd, but where are they now? Mexico running for the cartels?

P O P - UR reading my mind, I couldn't have said it better myself.....I had also given recent thought to seeing them disappear about the time the easy money went away in about '07 or '08.....

From what I read here, I truly believe they were shipped off to other states like TX where people may still embrace the vehicle and <10 MPG. ;)

I'm still waiting on someone to create a better way to carry my 3 kids plus their stuff and haul my boat every weekend of the summer. My old Armada and current F150 Supercrew both fit the bill better than anything else, and get nearly 20 MPG while doing so.

Texas is full of anything big, the bigger the better. I don't see many Excursions, but they are around. It's also pretty rare that I see an H1.

Here in Texas a lot of people really use their big trucks, but there are also a lot of folks have them because they are a status symbol.

I only had one sister, but we also spent a lot of weekends on the boat when I was a kid and we never needed an SUV. Somehow, Dad's tiny Toyota pickup always did the job. Of course, back then we were allowed to ride in the truck bed, rode bicycles without helmets and sometimes ran with scissors. I think people probably had more kids when I was growing up (at least they did at a younger age), yet station wagons seemed to do the work everyone thinks only SUVs can do now.

Keep your prius or whatever makes you sleep at night because you think you're saving the world. I'm more concerned with saving my family.

Is it true trucks and SUVs have different or lower safety standards than passenger cars?
I feel less safe with respect to vehicle control in a high CG vehicle.

At one point there was discussion of raising the insurance rates on SUVs because statically in an accident the drivers of smaller cars might not survive an accident with an SUV. Perhaps driving an SUV is safer if you are hit by another SUV?

It is a relief that for whatever reasons SUVs are not being handed down to young inexperienced drivers.
Perhaps parents rather their kids drive a more efficient higher mpg car.

As much as we all enjoy a trip down memory lane, you need to temper it with a little reality. Just for fun I looked up a 1990s Chevy Caprice wagon, which is pretty similar to the old school family trucksters that many of us rode in as kids. It is 4 inches shorter than a 2012 Suburban. Per fueleconomy.gov it also gets 17 MPG combined, the exact same as a new Suburban. It is also less powerful, has less interior volume, and cannot tow nearly as much. Obviously the older wagons would have less power, worse MPG, and were bigger, but it's harder to find much data on them. So you can take solace in the fact that family wagons of your youth were actually mediocre Suburbans with less ground clearance.:cool:

Regarding the large SUVs bought under Bush's $1.86 a gallon, part of it is that if you're in one now it doesn't make any sense to bail simply for gas mileage. My wife's 2007 Tahoe gets about 13.5MPG average for her toting around 4 kids 12,000 miles a year. Something that got 20MPG would save 250 gallons annually or about $1k a year.
Who's going to spend $40k on something smaller to save $1k annually in gasoline?

Of course SUV's don't handle like a passenger car and i don't drive mine like it does. Educated drivers are the answer.

I do remember ins. co.'s were thinking about raising the rates on SUV's because of the damage differential when in an accident with a car. Never made any sense to me. Kind of like raising the fire ins. rate of a concrete house in a neighborhood of stick built homes.

A majority of my friends children drive SUV's, in fact many would only buy their children SUV's. They gladly pay the gas bill. They value safety over economy.

Perhaps my friends and I are the anomaly in this.

A non SUV handles and stops better.

Currently drive a 1996 4WD 4dr Jimmy.
The driving experience like sitting on a beach ball, waste of gas.
2 me the Jimmy has no more side protection than our old Passat.
The Passat does everything better than the Jimmy.
Not that any of this matters ;)...

If you can't comprehend that a big, tall, heavy truck cannot corner and stop as well as a small car, frankly you aren't qualified to be driving ANYTHING. Hard to blame the car for the stupidity of the owner. My wife encountered steel road debris that fell off of a trailer in front of her at highway speed, fortunately she drove right through it and was able to control her left rear tire blowing out. She knows that her F150 isn't a sports car and that a swerve was the wrong response.

However I concur with the fine gentleman... I have no problem with someone driving a giant truck/SUV if you are hauling a 4 to 6 horse trailer, +30 foot boat, etc.

But most you see around Lost Angeles have +10K chrome low profile rims, $20-30K paint job, bumping their 50K watt stereo... and never more than two passengers.

And around my hood they have gone the way of the buffalo... seeing a lot more practical vehicles on the highways these days.

Why be satisfied with a car/truck that cant swerve around an obstruction?
When my car can avoid an accident my family and I are safer imho.

You have to know the limitations of your vehicle, as well as yourself. For example, most serious deer/car accidents aren't caused by deer, they are caused by drivers swerving to avoid deer. The average driver and vehicle are not equipped to make extreme avoidance maneuvers at 70 MPH. In my truck I would just drive right through them, with little concern of one coming through the windshield.

In all fairness, mandatory child seat laws have done a lot to making SUVs and minivans necessities for families with kids. It's nearly impossible to find a car (or station wagon, which are now an automotive rarity compared to when we grew up) which will allow 3 car seats across the back. So you can't stick a kid in the front, and you can only fit 2 in the back. Seems OK if you have 2 kids...until your kids inevitably want friends to come over to play, run a carpool, etc. Suddenly the average nuclear American family with 2.4 kids and a dog "needs" an SUV (which is wide enough to fit 3 car seats across) or a minivan.

Don't forget those rear facing seats in some of the old wagons, and my Toyota PU, while fine for the Lewis Craft run-a-bout, can't match my Suburban 2500 for towing the track cars & gear for a weekend at the track..
