My pet peeve on car forums...
Well I am going to be a Monday morning quarterback, after all it is Monday morning. It is to hear a new member just joined a car forum with a shopping list of what is wrong with their newly acquired 2nd hand luxo car - eg P car or BMW. Why are they so surprised that there is so much wrong with it? No PPI done, no research done. Buys first car they see etc. If one prospective newbie buyer could read this and get some help before buying, then I would feel really good......There is so much help on these car forums, they will help u save $$$$$.
Anybody else got pet peeves? |
Yeah, people who complain about other people's posts!
Just kidding! I agree with you. I would think a potential buyer would do their homework and a simple google search would direct them here and to a wealth of helpful threads. |
I bought my 1st Porsche in '98 sight unseen.
'81 SC Targa. Paid $10.5K Wasn't that bad of a deal. Had a few mechanical issues down the road but with over 100K miles wasn't too surprised. I didn't complain then and won't now. I learned a lot from working on that car. Even tracked it at several tracks in the Southeast. http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...36123982_n.jpg Sold her a couple summers ago to free up space.... |
some people buy cars knowing these things are wrong.
i bought my first BMW 325is with lots of problems. bad rear wheel bearings, rough idle, brake problems. actually the wheel bearings made so much noise, i could not hear what, if anything else was making noise. i onlyt paid $850 for the car and it has been an AWESOME car. i now enjoy driving it as much as the 911, and the parts are WAAAAAAY cheaper. |
I knew nothing! But I asked my friend his advice when he restored a Jeep. First thing he said, establish a budget and join a car forum specific to your car. He told me the guys on the forum will answer a lot questions and help you out. Who knew? :)

Baz - what tires were you running on the 81 SC? Look like Yoko A032.....
|
I normally buy any new car and establish a repair list that I work through. I think sharing common repairs is a benefit to the community, as it helps others know what to expect. What's the complaint again?
You want a pet peeve? People that think that their _____ car is the best thing on God's green earth. Let's face facts, most of our enthusiast cars would lose a drag race to a new Camry. |
My pet peeve - the "flaming" of others. Everybody is on a car forum to learn and share; I really don't understand the inevitable personal attacks that make good people leave a forum.
|
People that don't read the owners manual. This doesn't apply so much for the vintage car owner.

8" and 7" x 16" on deep offset 951 Fuchs to accommodate the Brembos. That car could stop on a dime (and give you 5 cents change!) |
Hmm, my pet peeve would be the consumate perfectionist who chides newbies for thier grammer, or corrects anybody on a meaningless misstep.
I gave up on the Datsun Z forums that I belonged to because of the bickering and sarcasm. |
People who take the time to type "USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION!"
If you have the time to type that, then you have the time to search for the answer yourself and provide the newbie the link. If you don't have time to search, and don't know the answer, just move along. In the "real" world if someone asked you for directions you wouldn't scream "USE YOUR GARMIN!!!" now would you? You would give them directions or tell them you don't know and move along. Being on the internet does not make any of us 9 feet tall nor give us the freedom to be snarky to a total stranger. angela |
^ what Angela said
I don't have a problem with new owners getting in over their head. I have never done a PPI on any of my cars. :) G |

I bought the 101 Projects car from Wayne. It needed more than 101!
