what's the fuss about MOONSHINE?
i just briefly paused on the new show.."moonshiners"..
ignoring the obvious fact that we DONT need another reality show, ever.. what is the deal? cant alcoholics just buy vodka like the rest of us? does it taste better? having said that..i have contemplating drilling a hole in my pressure cooker many-a-times. building a small still to "see if i can" is on my bucketlist. i dont even drink anymore. i have made rice wine by heating the rice slurry into an inverted cone which dripped into a bowl.. i'm not so sure i have ever tasted moonshine. i was offered some, but it tasted like vodka. (it was hazy back then)

Yup, ethanol and methanol are only one carbon cuzins but it can make all the difference in the world. Pays to re-refine the hootch at least three passes and it best be done at 185F...

I don't get it either, what's next, Meth Labs of the Midwest? How about we do a series on LA chop shops or marijuana growers in Oregon.

Good ideas! But now that you have posted this on a public website, someone will steal it and you won't get any royalties. Oh well. That's life.

Ferment stuff with good yeast leads to ETOH, water and other stuff. Distilling this leads to higher concentrations of ETOH. People with MOH poisoning have had the ETOH cut with MOH. MOH is very cheap.

The A in BATFE is for Alcohol. Revenoors were about finding untaxed stills/alcohol.
Our government used to live on import tarrifs and alcohol taxes.

My Arkansas hillbilly grandfather refered to all police as revenuers. I don't think he was trying to be ironic, that was simply the name he heard most as a young man. I have had the 'shine, it seems to be a different kinda drunk but what do I know I was really drunk at the time.

I may be stating the obvious but if it were not for the moonshiners and their drivers during prohibition there may have never been a National Association for Stock Car Racing.
Think NASCAR. Luke Duke and Boss Hogg. Its part of American History. Daytona Speedway was built by a man everyone thought was crazy, so he and his buddies could race legally. A little shine in your tank will give you a few extra RPM's.

Anyway.... As a side note, almost every culture has a "moonshine". The primary difference between regular spirits and "moonshines" are that the regular spirits are made from a beer or wine, with all other organics removed. When you ferment beer or wine, the seeds, stems, skin, leaves, mud, etc are all removed before fermentation. This leads to a clean fermentation. If you then distill these, you get spirits. If you leave in the other junk (leaves, skin, seeds, stems, etc), you get a lot of byproducts. Moonshine, grappa, sweetka, tequila all ferment the other organics along with the regular fermentalbles. That same "twang" in tequila is moonshine, sweetka and grappa. Not my thing. I prefer a nice XO Martell or High end Scotch...

I have tried it... and made a small batch (out of grape juice)... like drinking 200 proof vodka... or lighter fluid... YUCK!
I have been experimenting with 100 proof small batch Kentucky Whiskey(s), tastes OK and kicks like a mule, why anyone would need something stronger than that I don't know. Then there is Rumplemintz... when you need to be drunk NOW! ![]()

This is some legal stuff I can get that is made here in SC. Like drinking candy. By the way this is similar to the "Apple Pie" in Justified.

Nothing like sticking a big a$$ sign on your back that says "I'm breaking the law and you can't catch me" by going on a TV show to bring the heat down on yourself. When they do bust them all they need to show the jury is a episode of the show to get a conviction.

My question is...........if their doing an illegal act on TV then why can't the revenuers catch them? Hell, they know what they look like! Should'nt be that hard.
