Public Restroom Attendants $ or $$$

While in Italy,France and Poland, My wife and I kept running in to restrooms that you either have to pay or have a Restroom Attendant. Who ever thought this up is a little OFF. Do you know anyone who aspired to work in the Restroom Attendant Profession. Now the question how much money do you leave as a tip in a attended restroom?

the tip you leave in an attended restroom should be proportional to the service she provides for you

It's totally common in most of Europe. I always found it annoying because I don't ever arrive there with coins in my pocket and need a few transactions before I have small coins. Venice was over 2 Euros for public bathrooms last May. Germany is usually .50 or less. The upside is that the facilities are spotless and always kept that way. I'm far more annoyed by the bars and restaurants in the US that have these attendants with the tray of colognes and breath mints. Really hate that stuff in the US.

When we were in Vegas over Halloween, we went to a bar called Vamp'd to see a concert.
Found a restroom attendant there.

It's a freaking bar...

Yeah, I don't get it either. I can understand paying to use a clean restroom. I don't understand how handing me a towel is a profession.

That's why you always go when you see a mcdonalds. We learned that trick a long time ago when travelling in third world countries. No one to look over your shoulder when you take a dump or hand you the drying paper. I have to say that the restrooms are much cleaner then the one without except for restrooms in Canada. YOu can eat off the floor there.

It's the norm in Europe not the exception. You just get used to it and while slightly irritating, the bathrooms are usually very clean. I'd rather pay a euro for a clean bathroom there than what we usually get for "free" at a rest stop along I35 in Texas.... gross.....

I had to go pretty bad this past trip to Europe. We stopped at the train station for a public restroom and of course, you had to pay to get in and I did not have any coins. Run to the nearest shop and ask for change. The guy taps the cash box and says "it's locked, see". Ugh, I happened to see my favorite candy - fruit Mentos, grabbed a roll and threw it down on the counter. Got my change and into the restroom I went.

A lot of the rest stops in Germany now have a turnstile system, where you put the coins in and get a voucher as the turnstile opens. You can hit the head then and the voucher is good for around .50 in the store. Save a few of them up and you can get a drink or a snack.

Charlotte NC airport has them too. I don't get it. As one with a somewhat shy bladder, I never cared much for being observed in the act. Much less, expected to offer a tip for the observer!

I think the reason they exist in the United Satates is for Insurance purposes. There is generally going to be no fights or vandelism in a monitered restroom, and it makes some of the patrons feel like they are are being treated in a first class manner.

We went to Carlisle, PA a couple of years ago for a kit car event. Restroom attendant there and even with heavy use, the restroom was very clean. I think I tipped $1.

I really don't have an issue paying $1 or so for a clean restroom.

That makes sense but tipping some Turk that just wipes the rim of the urinal is crazy.

On the contrary, I don't think I've ever seen a foreign restroom attendant in Germany. They're about 99% German women. In the old eastern Germany there were some men doing it. But I don't think I've seen a man doing it in Germany in the last 20 yrs.

Yuck, but I admit we do have clean restrooms. I will leave a restaurant, making sure I'm vocal about to the manager if there's a filthy washroom.
I made the local Wendy's install a baby changing table in the mens washroom.
Health departments here have super high standards on restaurants in Ontario, now most cities they must have their last inspection report right on the front door.

ya know it strikes me that these clean restroom taxes are unfair - men don't need cleanliness and women do (or at least want cleanliness) -- yet both genders pay the same amount!

The expected tip is very little in Europe. $.25 will be considered fine. Any small change AAMOF.
