"In addition to paying the first-time fine of $50, violators could be required to attend a wood-smoke awareness session. Fines rise for each repeat violation up to $500."

Wood smoke awareness session, WTF is that??

So glad that I have a wood burning fireplace and live in a civilized state that does not have issues like this!

Flak suit on!

There's nothing "green" about burning wood in a fireplace.

But, if you burn coal in a fireplace, sometimes the smoke is green, if it's some good, hard anthracite.

Yeah, that was a head-scratcher.

I love wood burning fireplaces but they're not clean by any stretch. And they don't heat the house, either. At least not in a truly cold place like Minnesota. They actually suck heat out of the house up the chimney. They warm-up the space right above the chimney real good, though, for any cold birds flying around.

Fortunately, this FP ban in L.A. is a rare thing. What the OP is not telling you is that we have an extreme fog condition today, I can barely see the building across the street out my window. It's already clearing up a little at 8:30 am, an hour ago it was the thickest I've ever seen.

I have a wood burning fire place *with an insert* that heats my the whole tri-level house in the coldest parts of our winters..... also a pellet stove running in the shop right now. It's nice & toasty out there on this 40 deg day.

I hates snakes, and spiders, and talking to ignorant people.

LA not the only one with this rule, got it in the Central Valley too. We've switched to the gas fireplace inserts with the fan to move the heat back into the room. Don't run it much, just for a bit to take the chill off. Makes the wife happy.

Had an aunt who installed a wood pellet fireplace with a catalitic converter to reduce the pollution. Only way she could get the fireplace permitted from what she said.

Why would anyone need to run a fireplace in LA? It's 84 degrees right now.

You're only off by 30 degrees, not bad.

Every house I've ever seen for the last 40 years in cold places that uses a FP has an "insert", including our houses in MN. and WI. They still will not heat a large house, I'd be curious as to what your set-up is?

Pellet stoves or feed corn stoves are a completely different thing and they tend to put out a lot of heat. A normal fireplace w/o some retrofit to contain the heat is a net-loss in a cold climate. You do not live in a cold climate, so maybe that explains your lack of knowledge.

Good to see we have a lively debate on the subject.

PM 10 aka 'dust particulate less than 10 microns' is one of the six US EPA criteria air pollutants.

The others are
03/Ozone
CO/Carbon Monoxide
Pb/Lead
NOx
SOx

The release of any of the 6 mixes with other emissions to create the generic smog. Greenhouse gases include Methane (cow farts and emissions from burying organics in landfills) and CO2.

Burning unnecessarily is a stupid thing to do without controls. Dumping stuff in a landfill is ALSO a stupid thing to do....but since WWII it's what the U.S. does.

There is a market for every type of waste except for 'poopy diapers'....Wayne has used those for moderators...

Anyways, separating waste at the source and then processing the waste and reusing it is smarter than landfilling....one of these days the majority of the people in the U.S. will figure that out.

just ordered three cords. got another myself from dead trees behind the house.

i can remember sitting outside the studio in burbank eating lunch. casually watching girls walk by. one was smoking a cigarette. suddenly a cop car screeched up. she was issued a ticket for smoking in public.

i had heard the law was passed on the radio. but didn't realize it was real until then.

sustainable biofuels burning can make sense if they (e.g. logging slash) are burned ina high-tech low pollution furnace

we have one here and it cost about $6 million

I know you are trying to be ironic, but SoCal has a very bad air pollution problem and wood is not a low emissions fuel even in a modern woodstove, much less a pile of debris.

Joe Bob - come on up and see out recycling facilities sometime - we lag Germany, but are getting a lot better...
