Putting my Volvo up for sale

So I've decided to sell my 2000 Volvo V70 - it is nothing to write home about it.

It's black, it has a leather interior that is pretty beat up and it has some damage from a side swipe type situation that was there when I bought it. The wheels have become intimate with the curb often enough as well.

Mechanically though it is sound. It has good tires, runs well and has been well cared for in that regard by me in the time I have had it. The engine is strong and it passes smog easily (it's not THAT old). It has about 130k miles on it. I have put about 25k on it in the 4 or so years I have had it.

My concern is that cosmetically it's in pretty poor condition and I don't expect it to be an easy sell. My most pressing concern is the driver's seat is pretty tore up and I'm just wondering if I should fix it before I try to sell it. The leather repair isn't cheap - recovering it would be probably in around $500. My expectation of the car as is though is around $3000.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thanks.

Yeah, if I couldn't get more than $2500 for it I would probably just fix the seat and keep it myself and sell the other car.

Maybe...

Don't fix the seat on a $3000 car

If anything, buy a "better" used one locally on car-part.com

All the other $3000 Volvos will have seat wear as well. It's a cheap used car

Wrong wheel drive. As in, ''My Miata is superior to your Cooper S because it is WWD.''.

Sounds like a good winter beater. Maybe sell it in the spring ?

Around here a good running $2500 used car will sell FAST. It's hard to find a good used car that is mechanically sound, throw it up on Craigslist as is and I bet it sells. It's a cheap used car, don't over think it.

Try to find a used seat in a junkyard and sell it with that...

No pun intended but there's soon to be a flood of Volvo's and everything else on the market.

I just snagged a turbo 940 so I can park the 911 this winter. With the factory locker it's been fun in the rain

To the OP, recovering the seat for $500 seems like a terrible idea. You could get an entire interior out of a wrecked car for that. Local Pick-A-Part places always seem to have 850/v70s on the lots, then there are the volvo forums, and lastly ebay and craiglist.

I happen to think a nice 850R is worth keeping, I have had mine for a bit over a year and it is a nearly flawless daily driver. They are cheap to buy, not difficult to maintain, have some of the best seats around, and with a mild tune are more than fun for the daily grind.

Hey, if mine looked like that I'd probably keep it. It doesn't though; it's not a bad car or anything it's just (barely) not the car I want to keep at the moment and I'm likely getting ready to buy the wife a new Mazda 5 (it's what she wants).

So which to sell? The 2005 Prius which is 'presentable' and what I usually drive if I'm going to be taking customers to lunch or the beat up old Volvo?

The Volvo has some big plus sides to it to be honest. It's a solid, reliable car that I can work on and I know if for example the engine were to go I could replace it for under or at a grand and probably do the work myself with some help. The Prius is a crap shoot in this regard BUT it has also been reliable. Both are very easy to maintain.

The biggest thing is which am I more comfortable driving? Unfortunately the answer is the Prius (as much as it pains me).

The value on the prius is higher of course so if I were to use it for a trade in then it would be a better trade in but if I can get $3000 for the Volvo I'll probably be satisfied.

Well, it was an easier sell than I thought it would be. Took about 5 days and I got more than I expected by just a bit. I only really had the ad up on craig's list for a day though. Two folks wanted to look at it. The first bought it but the second had a time arranged for the next day. I told the second that I had someone coming to look at it that evening and that it was first come first served. I let the 2nd know the 1st bought it that night and she got all snarky with me.

Plenty of Volvos to pick from on Craig's List. Lighten up.
