Mac took a dump
seized for the first time thursday night. screen went to a grey pinstripe and wouldn't respond. had to restart.
by friday it was happening every ten minutes. could restart by resetting the vram/sram? but obviously not a long term solution. now i'm getting this screen after restarting. the nearest mac store is only 300 miles. apple care ran out last month.

Looks like a hardware failure.
How does it act booting from the OS Disc?

the same.
had a graphics card go bad on my old macbook pro a few years back. just went black with no warning. this feels different. apple repaired it for free. only spent three weeks with no computer.

Backup your data pronto.
Buy a new Mac on Amazon. Or, a refurb from the Apple Store. Send this one in or drop it off at the Apple Store for repair. I wouldn't be surprised if they do it for free. Sell your repaired Mac on Craigslist or Ebay. Win!

Good advice.
If you have a second Mac you can chain them together using a FireWire cable, boot the bad one while holding the T key. Boots it into Firwire Target Disc Mode. It will pop up on the good Mac as additional drive so you can easily copy/back up your data and even wipe it before sending it out. |

You can also use Carbon Copy Cloner for free to exactly mirror the old drive to the new drive. Works like a charm.

27 inch IMac
3.4ghz intel core 17 16 gig 1333mhz ddramd radeon hd 6970m 2048 mb Running lion 10.7.5 I am fairly well backed up. I make a good chunk of my living with this thing. There's no scenario where the next month doesn't suck. |

It's dead. Won't boot at all. Some work related stuff still trapped on it. Directors love it when they have to send you everything again.
It's outside the range for the seagate recall. But the net has a dozen stories of machines affected outside the range. |
