how about we split TX in half - one piece is in the South; the other piece is in the West

here's a hint: all the cotton plantations go in piece #1; all the stinkin' desert parts go in piece #2

alternatively: cottonmouth habitat = south; rattlesnake habitat = west

M.D. Holloway 12-10-2012 01:17 PM

I still think Tejas as the true South...it was only consider west in the 1800's when it was west...buncha yahoo's!

H-Net Reviews

A quote from the review:

"One theme that permeates the entire book is the identification of Texas as a southern rather than a western state. From the earliest Anglo migrants of the Old South, who implanted an agricultural, slave-holding economy and held political control of the state, to the secession crisis and alignment with the Confederacy, Texas retained its strong southern roots. Its western past, Campbell asserts, was short-lived (1865-1885) and represented only a minority of Texans. By the close of the frontier (1890), Texas had more in common with southern cotton farmers than western ranchers and cattlemen."

Hahahaha... so somebody wrote a book, huh?

kidrock is right, you're one of those guys who's never wrong. :D

Find all the links and opinions out there in the wild west of the internet you want (especially on partisan hack websites that want to portray it a certain way), but Texas is a western state.

It's west of the Mississippi. Maybe you'll try to refute that.

THERE ......ARE ......TWO ..........LIGHTS!!!!

Texas is still east of here.
Ok it's a little south too, so we'll call it south-east.

Every state west of the Mississippi is a western state?? Really, it's not 1848 anymore!
Texas was part of the Confederacy so it is a Southern state! Try to refute that.

Did you miss where I wrote:

"Saying that Texas is in the South and not the West is a pretentious comment? How? The subject is certainly open to debate but I can't see how it is pretentious."

My position is supported by plenty of people. Your position is supported by plenty of people too. I suspect mine is more mainstream and is the position most academics would support as well.

Please continue to provide evidence supporting your position. Actually, some evidence instead of attacks would be refreshing.

only if they were liberal arts faculty

science faculty would simply announce that there is no experimental data, the problem is merely definitional and thus uninteresting, and that they are leaving the meeting and going back to their lab to get some work done

good thread, gents. LOL!

we have black widows. i hate them. i generally let all eight legged creatures live. except BW's. i kill them with whatever means are at hand.

i've seen one dropped into a bottle of solvent, i think it was MEK, but i could be wrong, and that damn thing was twitching for hours. trust me, i did not do that cruel act. i prefer them dead RIGHT NOW.

I have Black Widow spiders all over my yard. I wear gloves when taking out the trash because they like the nooks in the plastic trash and recycling bins.

Scott

No one had posted anything regarding whether Texas was a western state.

So that would make any reasonable person suspect that your "position" is at the very least, suspect.

You know, meaning that it had some sort of agenda.

So... simple question: what was your reason for posting, "Texas isn't out west! It's in the south," huh?

winders 12-11-2012 01:16 AM

Heel n Toe,

Now you are just making stuff up and forgetting or not noticing that a few posts got deleted. The post I was responding to got deleted. It's quoted in post #39 in this thread.

I made the assumption that the person that made that post was talking about where he lived when he said "out west". He lives in the great state of Texas so I assumed he meant that Texas was "out west" as in "the west".

Now, that assumption could have been wrong on a couple of levels. He could have meant Arizona, New Mexico, or some other state in the west. Or, he could have meant west of where he was. I think I got the assumption right, though.

Like I said, not everyone shares the same opinion on this subject. Again, this is a good read:

who even cares? i grew up in texas...and i dont care.

i dont care if it is west or south..(seems like we are debating apples and oranges..or better yet..left or down)..when i lived there, it was "here".

let it go..

technically, it can be both..left AND down. :D

onewhippedpuppy 12-11-2012 06:08 AM

Texas is South of me, therefore it is the South. Screw all of you other people. Or as Davy Crockett once said, "you can all do go hell, I'm going to Texas". So there.

This all started out with an off-handed comment. I had no idea certain people would be so passionate about it....
